Questions about some parts
Questions about some parts
Hello everyone,
I currently drive an Evo 9 all stock under the hood except an ECU reflash and custom tune. I am getting 300.9 WHP on a Dynajet with 21 psi boost with the stock turbo.
I just recently bought the HKS Hi-power catback exhaust, Tomei downpipe with o2 housing, Tomei expreme headers, the brand spanking new Tomei M7960 turbo, WORKS high flow drop in filter, WORKS 780cc fuel injectors, Walbro GS317 255lph fuel pump, and NGK Iridium plugs.
My question to you all is ruffly how much power can I expect to see with these items?
I know the turbo is still new so there are no numbers to base it off of but from what I hear it's a little better then the FP Green. My car is going to be the first one in the states to have it put on and EDO performance is going to tune it. Because the turbo is so new and Tomei wont tell them what they have found on thier own 4G63, the EDO crew will have to wait untill we get my car onto the Dyno and start attempting to tune it. Only problem is I'm impatient, I want to know now. My guess is around 350 WHP but I wanted to get some other ideas.
Any ideas would be great and I will keep everyone up to date as we find out more. We are waiting for the owner of EDO to get back in 3 weeks and we are going to start the work. Keep an eye out on www.edoperformance.com for updated information on the new Tomei turbo in the next few months.

Ok everyone, sorry for the late reply. I was finally given permission to release the information on the turbo.
Now keep in mind this is the Tomei M7960 PROTOTYPE of the production turbo. Pete from WORKS tuned the car and EDO Performance did all the installation. With the HKS Hi-power catback exhaust, Tomei downpipe with o2 housing, Tomei expreme headers, the brand spanking new Tomei M7960 turbo, WORKS high flow drop in filter, WORKS 780cc fuel injectors, Walbro GS317 255lph fuel pump, and NGK Iridium plugs, I am now getting 327.7 ALL WHEEL HP, 280.1 ALL WHEEL TQ, and 22 PSI.
This is a conservitive tune due to the fact I have stock head studs. WORKS and EDO Performance would rather tune vehicles for max performance and reliability so people like myself wont blow the head gasket and be down a daily driver, however still benifit from the new additional power.
Ok all more as it comes in. I am a regular Joe with a regular budget so parts around the holidays are going to be slow. Next in line is WORKS SS-4 suspention package (WORKS/Öhlins Stage IV or Group-N Coilover Suspension, WORKS Front Swaybar, WORKS USB Front Swaybar Bushings, WORKS Adjustable Rear Swaybar, WORKS USB Rear Swaybar Bushings)

I found this link that explains about the tomei turbo.

I'm making around that power with my stock Evo 8 turbo, but unfortunately for you you're limited by cali's 91 octane whereas I have 93 and colder air temps on my side. It's a nice looking piece and about on par with FP and CBRD's price tag, but I really wish they'd list a lb/min flow rate instead of cfm. It looks to be semi-comparable to a Green and with all the options for stock frame type turbos for us in the states though I don't really see it being a contender.
im sorry i have to agree that is a complete waste of money and if i were you i would feel ripped off. all that stuff you added and you only gained 27+ hp. how much did you spend total to gain only 27hp. Guezz you compeletely wasted your cash to test out a new turbo no thanks at all. Now you did say it was a conservative tune because of headstuds. I thought stock head studs could handle at least 400hp or alot more but then again apr stud are like what 100 and some change. WHY NOT UPGRADE THOSE FIRST before you buy the rest of that works nonesense part list. So then you can tune this turbo for real and show us what it really can do. Because as it stands right now if you paid for labor and parts all for 27hp man somebody got completely taken advantage of so they would not have to spend the money to test the turbo and its was not EDO

Refund!!! Try getting more out of your IX. Or push the Tomei more. You have nothing to worry about. The OEM head studs may not match up to the strength of the ARP head studs buy your nowhere near the of the OEM limits. Better yet, UPGRADE your head studs. What do you plan on doing with all of that suspension work done?!?! If you can buy that stuff, you should be able to get $100 ARP head studs!
I'm done.
I'm done.
Ok guys, sorry for the the late reply. Had a lot going on with work.
Yes I am getting ARP head studs on Jan 15th (payday). This tune was weak because my car was running very very lean when I bought it and didnt know. I drove it from Seattle down to Oceanside Cali. EDO said the engine should have blown on the drive down. So we did the weak tune to play it safe until we can look at the internals to see if any damage has been done. Also keep in mind it is only 1 psi boost more then I had my stock turbo. As proof damage was done with the lean tune, my compressor wheel on the stock turbo was warped from the heat.
Once we get the studs in place and check the motor we are going to tune the car and do a raw power pull on the dyno to see what numbers it can get. Then we'll retune it for daily driving and reliability.
We are planning on getting the Tomei 2.2L genisus 4g63, the suspension as mentioned above, Snow performace meth injection, perrin intercooler, hypertune intake manifold, WORKS throttle body, ACT clutch (not sure what one yet), sparco pro2k seats, spacro 5 point harness, bolt in roll cage (not sure what company yet).
Thats pretty much a list of the big stuff i plan on getting. We are eventually looking for around 500+ whp. This current turbo isnt rated for that much power so this means we will have to replace sooner or later. For 2009 EDO has me going to car shows and this turbo will help me get points and have fun in the mean time until the car is track ready.

Here is a post from Blaze on solcalevo.net regaurding this same topic on my turbo. Seems everyone has the same thoughts about my outcome.
Guys:
As you know, this was a prototype turbo. It is significantly different from the final production unit Tomei has produced. There is a reason they call it a prototype.
This product took over 2.5 years to produce. It is not a bored out 20G, nor is it a some custom configuration of a Garret. The engineers at Tomei have designed this from the ground up. That means everything from the exhaust housing to the internals were produced to 100% Tomei Spec. This is important to understand for a couple of reasons. It allows the designers the ability to think and act outside the box (not restrained by the limitations of a parts supplier) and second, design short comings can quickly be re-configured with new parts of their own making (if they did not like how something was working, they simply produced a new part). This includes compressor trims, the number of blades or porting specs. It's like being able to draw a picture for yourself verses doing a "connect the dots."
The entire system is a direct both on. You don't need any supporting products, manifolds or O2 Housings to run it. Oil and Water lines are included. This turbo is capable of well beyond 400WHP and owners wil find it has a much wide power band, spool is practically seamless and the torque is through the roof compared to it's nearest competition. You can drive it daily on the street, you run it on the track and god help anyone who runs this in combonation with one of their strokers.... THAT is a dangerous though (unless you're in the car with the combo).
For more information, please contact EDO as they are the West Coast distributor for Tomei and I understand will be taking pre-orders soon. Also, you can read up on the unit, see pictures of the development process and charts here: http://www.tomeipowered-usa.com/usa/...news/m7960.htm
Hope that is helpful.

Your doing something I don't have the ***** to do, try something new. Props on your exploration!
thank you for the good luck, my wife hates my car more then ever as it is so trying something new that goes wrong would prolly send her over the edge. I will post again as soon as i get new numbers so stay tuned over the next few weeks and ill get new numbers for you guys to look at. hopefully this turbo will proove to you guys that it is worth getting depending on what you look for in a turbo (sounds like this turbo is for fast spool and hi 300's - low 400's hp range)
On another note i did notice a problem with my car last night as i was leaving base taking a friend for a test drive. As i was getting on the on ramp i was doing 50 mph, when i smashed the gas to get up to 80 my car was kinda surging. It would speed up for a couple seconds then bog down then speed up then bog down. that happened until i hit 80 mph then the car seemed fine again. not sure what the deal was, maybe since the air is MUCH cooler now then when i did the tune i was having hard time sucking in air.
what do u guys think the problem could have been. Ps i dont have a boost gauge in there yet, i need 2 grand more to get all the gauges i want.

Could be a number of things, plugs fouled out and breaking up under full boost or just a bad gap, maybe the clutch slipping (I'm pretty sure you'd know that one though), overboost correction from the ecu (but there again I doubt that one). I'd say check the plugs first, and if anything the colder air would make more power and pull a tad bit harder if anything.

With the colder air you are probably making more boost than you were before, putting the compressor outside of it's efficiency range. So it is possible that you are getting compressor surge. Just as an example, on my stock turbo 05 VIII I was making 334 on a Mustang with most of the mods in my sig at 23 psi. When the temp dropped I was hitting 25+ psi and was having surging issues at part throttle acceleration or when I started a low rpm pull in a higher gear (4th or 5th). Because of how quickly the stock or stock like turbo's spool it is something that is noticeable a lot earlier than an on the medium and large frame aftermarket turbo's.

Yea that sounds about right Josh, seems like you pretty much hit on the head with the discription, i was in 4th gear when i did the pull. ill just drive it nice until i can get the studs and retune done.
Thanks for the info, always nice to know whats going on with the car.
