Wow, you have been a member since 2003 and still a noob? You should start contributing man. Its not hard, just a lot of reading and replying. Well anyways, to answer your question the wastegate is controlled by exhaust gas.

LOL, well i dont own an evo. iv owned a mirage, and now own a 3rd gen eclipse that i just put the VIII dohc head on it, and now im trying to put a stock tubo on it as well.

i guess i wasnt clear, how do you control the boost, (or maybe you cant at stock), how do you turn up and down the boost ona stock evo.

btw thank for the links.

You CAN control boost through your ecu. I don't quite understand what you are asking.

The amount of exhaust gas that passes through your manifold and opens the wastegate when the right amount of pressure is applied by the exhaust gasses.

On a totally bone-stock Evo, given there is no alt boost control and no Ecu tampering, there is NO way you can control the boost. This does not only imply to Evos but probably every turbo car there is out there.
What are you trying to do? Maybe if you let us know what you are intending to do, we can better help you with you question.

internal wastegates have a wastegate actuator that moves the wastegate open and close by pulling on it with a rod or something based on the spring pressure and whatever other things you have boost solenoid etc to fool the spring in a sense. internals taper and such from being blown open from exhaust gases. external wastegate is a little better at controlling boost because the spring directly controls when the wastegate will open and usually will not taper. externals are placed on the exhaust manifold these two things make externals better at controlling and holding boost. most manufactured turbo cars come with internal wastegates to better limit boost. the system is usually built to prevent overboosting.

the reason i ask is because im trying to run less boost then stock. in fact im trying to run as little as possible.

im building a motor and havent done internal yet and i dont want to blow it up before i can beef it up.

I'm assuming you are using the stock wastegate that comes on the stock evo turbo. If so, the minimum amount of boost you can run is whatever the spring is inside the wastegate....which I think is 11psi (correct me if I'm wrong..I have a real turbo on my car ).

Anyways, take a vacuum hose from a pressure source (i.e. intake manifold) and run it directly to the nipple on the wastegate. BAM! Instant minimum boost you can run.

Or, if you cannot afford to run any boost at all, you can always disconnect the flapper arm from the wastegate actuator and let it fly wide open 100% of the time. You will only be able to develop 5-10psi of boost pressure no matter how hard you try. Ultimate "limp mode"
