Anyway Shep and I have been emailing each other back and forth. He's more then happy to get inside the tranny and see whats going on.
He also said he wanted to work with me on getting the correct gear ratios for my power level and needs so we'll see how that goes.

maybe just ask for his 3rd gear on the new rebuild
I've gone 109-110 at 7k in 4th with basic bolt ons. Keep us updated on what the problem was, really curious
im not sure i agree w/ everything that is said here about the 4th gear topping out at 110mph in a IX tranny. I have a IX, obviously the IX 5 spd and also the Shep re-build. I kept the 3-4th ratios so its same as stock and I've never been able to hit 110 @ 7krpm. In fact i trapped at highest 111mph and i was DEFINATELY way past 7000rpm. I want to say probably between 7400-7600rpm by the time i was through the traps. I think this is true for every IX tranny. Noone i know finishes 1/4 mile at 110mph in a IX unless they are well past 7000rpm.
(if it bothers you that much then i'd go w the optional VIII gearing for 3-4)

Back when I still owned the car I sent the transmission back to shep and had him put the Evo 8 3rd and 4th in and the car was money after that. It wasn't his fault that's for sure and if I made it sound like that then thats my bad.
Also if you can afford it have him double synchro 5th gear...high speed lock outs where no longer a problem with shifting @ 8k in 4th around 130mph.
Even with regular driving shifting into 5th was like butter.

Clocked two back to back runs of 11.1@124mph banging into redline 10ft before the trap in 4th gear. Running an EVO 9 5-speed. Shifting into 5th slowed my times. So I let it ride into redline, set @7800rpm. On EVO 8 Enkies shoed HOOSIERS. Ran a couple of 128mph runs on a rebuild 9 tranny with EVO 8 3rd and 4th gears in her, test and tunes, no clean runs. Goodluck with your rebuild!

Your car eats up that "10 feet before the trap" in .056 (about 1/20th) of a second at 120 mph. That's amazing discrimination on your part.
