Rear diff questions..

I'll start off by saying I'm noob when it comes to how LSD's work and how the rear end works. I'm currently trying to track down a problem with my evo's drivetrain that is causing it to be FWD or atleast 80% fwd or better. I've removed the TC cover and front diff. All looks good in there, diff gears are all in tact, ring and pinion gears are in tact. Now I've got the rear diff cover off, and everything looks ok but I'm afraid to remove the LSD to fully inspect the diff gears from the housing because I don't know how to properly reinstall everything. I've NEVER worked on a rear end before and it's a bit more than I feel comfortable tackling. I have the FSM but so much of it unclear to me. All this talk of shims and spacers. I have no idea where to get these shims and spacers. Simply put I would be second guessing everything.
So is there a way to tell if the gears are doing their job while still in place? If you turn the drive shaft the left rear wheel spins. If you spin the left rear wheel the drive shaft spins. If you spin the right wheel the drive shaft spins. There is no binding or abnormal sounds during this process.
