Lube your shifter bushings!

This is just a friendly reminder to every to lube your underhood shifter bushings! I have the Buschur aluminum ones and I began feeling my shifter get very rough notchy feeling so I figured it was time to lube the bushings with some copper anti-seize compound. These things were seized solid in place and would not budge! It took a lot of effort to get the shifter cable off the bushing and even more effort (and some PB Blaster) to get the bushing off the transmission lever. I sanded the pin on the lever and the inner area of the circle cable piece, lubed up the bushings and they now fit snugly but spun freely and could be removed easily. I put everything back together, test-drove the car, and wow did things feel a lot nicer! I should have done this sooner.

cool man thanks for the tips. but one question. instead on anti seize do you think synthetic grease will also do te job just fine???

I thought about using grease instead; I'm sure a nice thick heavy-duty grease would also work well.

shifter bushings was the first mod I did to my EVO almost 4 years ago. after one winter the shifting started to get notchy like you described. So, I took everything apart, cleaned off the corrosion and used white lithium grease on all the metal surfaces. my shifting has been butter smooth ever since.

I definitely need to do this as well as the shifter has been feeling more and more notchy. I even felt that I should've sanded out the centers of the bushings a little more so that they slipped on smoothly and spun freely.

What grit sand paper do you guys recommend to sand out the centers of the bushings a little bit?

I use a dremel on the bushings. I'm lazy, and it's more effective.

I need to do this too. First gear is squeaking and its been notchy putting the car in 5th. But it's been this way since AMS put them in...

thats what happens with metal bushings.


should of went with a poly type like WORKS

No thanks, I want to eliminate as much play as possible. Lubing the bushings once every few years is worth the added directness of a solid metal bushing to me.
