Installed HKS Type 1 where clock used to be

I decided to put my Type 1 where the clock had been, if anyone can tell me how to get the pictures uploaded I will post them. It keeps on telling me that the file is too large and that the max is 102400 bytes.

Go to the newbie forum and see the sticky I put there on how to attach pics.

If it's too large, shrink it in a photo editor or host it elsewhere and link to it here using it IMG command.

Any chance you could post some install hints and tips? I've been looking into getting a turbo timer (HKS Type 1 to be exact) and the clock replacement mounting seems like a great choice...

Well, it really wasn't too difficult but it was a little time consuming as I took my time with the trimming so I would not accidently scratch anything. First off do a search for "turbo timer install" and look for the write up by Vanilla Sky as it is really good.

! Please follow these directions at your own discretion !

1. To take the dash apart begin by removing the two screws holding on the bezel around the instrument cluster and remove the bezel.

2. There are two screws holding in the pocket under the radio, take the screws out and then pull the pocket straight back as there are also two retaining clips holding it in.

3. Pull the A/C dials straight out to remove them, they are just press fitted. You will see two brass looking screws behind the temp nob and the vent distribution nob. Unscrew and then carefully start pulling the A/C bezel off but do so evenly keeping the alignment as it sits. There are several retaining clips holding the bezel on.

4. You will now see two screws roughly under the A/C vents holding the silver trim piece that goes across the dash on. Take out these two screws and starting with the side near the instrument cluster start to take the trim piece along with the vents and clock off. BE CAREFUL! There are several retaining clips all along this piece, you may want to use a flat blade screwdriver with a towel under it to pop some of the retaining clips out. Also some of the white retaining clips may stay behind so be sure to look for them so that you may put them back on the trim piece. As you are pulling off the trim piece unplug the clock and the flasher.

5. Take the trim over to a well lit work area so that you may see what you are doing. You will see that the vents pop out easily so take them off to get them out of the way while you are working. At this time you will also pop the clock out. The HKS Type 1 does not fit into the space as it is, the opening is between 1.5 to 2mm too narrow. I used a Dremel with a 1/8 inch grinding bit to do the initial openig followed by a 1/8 inch ball bit to do the fine tuning.

!!!!!! TAKE YOUR TIME !!!!!!

Do not get in a hurry. If you let that bit get away it will reek havoc on your trim piece. I constantly fitted the timer, took it out, trimed, refitted it ect, until I had it right. I canted mine towards me a little bit, but that is your choice. Once fitted I used some black silicon to hold it in, you will have to let it sit for some length of time for it to dry but there are several other things such as epoxy that you could use as well. Now you will be left with about a 4mm gap above the timer. I trimmed down a black zip tie to fit in the space but you can use whatever you like to fill the gap. Just don't leave it open as it will look very unfinished.

6. Now look at the opening in your dash. Right between the two vents is a piece of plastic connecting the top with the bottom, it is the only plastic there so you can't miss it. You will need to cut about an inch hole right in the middle of it so that the harness from the timer may fit through, there is not enough space to just bend the harness off to the side.

7. At this point you will start to reassemble. Pass the timer harness through the hole in the plastic and pull the end as you bring the trim piece to the dash. DON'T FORGET TO PLUG IN THE FLASHER! (as I did) Assuming that you have already wired up the timer you should now be good to go, just reverse the procedure to take the dash off making sure to firmly push down the pieces that you are reattaching to get the retaining clips to seat.

One of the really cool things about putting the HKS Type 1 where the clock was is that it is very visable if you know it is there, but not readily noticabe when the car is off. Being so visable you can set the second RPM warning (the one that turns red) to go off as a shift light! It is very bright and easy to recognise where as the first RPM warning tone is not very loud.

Good luck if you decide to try it and I'm sure you will like it there, it looks great in person.
