Modifying Intake to work with HKS 280

My issue:

I bought the Buschur MAF Pipe and filter a few weeks back and have had a few stalling issues since I have put it on.

I have heard from numerous individuals that if you replace the Buschur open filter with a standard K & N closed filter it may solve the problem.

Reason why I ask is because I just received some HKS 280 cams to put in the car, (factory ecu, stock valvetrain, etc) I have been emailing David and he commented that he could not tune the car with 280s unless I return to the stock rubber MAF hose. I guess it has to do with the idle.

The problem: I just spent 280 to purchase this MAF pipe kit with filter and would lose a good amount of money if I had to get rid of this.

Possible Solutions:

K & N closed filter

Possibly tapping the intake so I could run the stock line back to the valve cover, instead of using a breather filter.

If anyone has anything to add or would like to give your input, please do. I am trying to get this all sorted out to get tuned here soon.

My setup is a tad different as I'm using a injen intake with an open filter and I too have 280 cams. I don't have any idle issues other then they are lopey as hell lol. You can flash the ecu and dial in the idle using the flash and by adjusting the biss screw on the throttle body. Mine hasn't stalled once. Only issues I have right now is restarting the car when it's hot. It will idle really low until I drive it around for a couple of minutes then the idle is clean again. But yet again that could be due to my emissions crap removed, such as the egr valve ect.

With the ecu flash you can also rescale the maf for the larger intake pipe as well, this seems to fix some of those idle problems and 1st tip in on the throttle.

good luck!

do you think a closed filter will help as well?

NVM, just looked at the link you posted in your OP. I dunno how much of a difference there will be using that filter.

I heard a closed filter would help. Also heard that running a nipple on the intake and utilizing the stock hose to the valve cover would also work.

This has more to do with vibrations of the pipe upsetting the maf. and causing idle issues. With the rubber hose....virbation is minimal eliminating the prob.

I tapped the intake and put a closed filter on, seems to help.

Try harder. I drove on this setup for 2+ years with zero stalling issues. There are lots of ways to make this work, mostly trying different timing numbers around idle, raising the various idle conditions and modifying the ISC steps as well.

Customer's of David can tune cars with 280s.

Mellon could help you. I have gotten two tuners to get my 280s just right!

This is my setup:

Buschur Stage 1 and 2

Will have Buschur install the 280s. I will be adding a Walbro 255 as well.

Is this ok to drive off without a tune until someone else would tune me?

I haven't been tuned as of yet

Buschur isn't trying very hard if he can't get HKS 280's to idle well with his intake pipe. My FP4R's, which are much more aggressive than the HKS 280's, idle very well with the Buschur intake pipe. Its not hard at all to do; just adjust the idle timing, desired idle RPM, and initial ISCV values a bit.

You'll be fine to drive on the cams without a tune, just don't beat the hell out of your car.

I had the HKS 280's on the buschur pipe on my car as a daily driver...some minor idle/timing tweaks and it was fine, never had to touch the ISC or BISS.

Buy an AEM EMS and theyll run like a champ! And its worth the money, Dave can make rediculous numbers with the AEM instead of the stock computer!
