Exclamation Help! Timing belt came loose while driving!

I just installed some HKS 280s last week. Car has been running great since last thrusday. Today, I was doing some logs, and right after I left off the gas and started braking from doing a 3rd gear pull from 2500 - 7500, the car started making some Weird noises.

I get out and it sounded like it was coming from the valvetrain/cam gears. I turn the car off, and the timing belt is so loose that I was able to pull it off the gears!!

I had the car towed home, and plan on taking a look tonight.

Any ideas what would cause the timing belt to to that??? I have one of those Greddy Kevlar belts too, so it didn't break or anything.

Sucks as the car has been running great, in fact I was soo happy with how much power i gained from jumping to the 280s from 272s.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

do you have adjustable cam gears(?), loose tensioner, etc.

Yes, I have adjustable cam gears, but they are fine. That was the first thing I checked.

Can the tensioner go bad?

Did you rush the turning of the tensioner or took your time of 1-2 sec pause per turn?

Is there a possibility that the pistons meet the valves? I'm just hoping nothing major happened as this is my DD.

I did it somewhat slowly like the EvoMoto how-to explained.

I also turned the car over by hand (crank) two times to take the slack out. And, I've been DDing this thing for almost a week?

Yeah I'm gonna order a new tensioner/pulley, then hope the valves didn't kiss the pistons....

my tensioner gave way last year.... i shut the car off imediatly, even with that my valves hit the pistons..
heres the damage:

broken valves
head was tooo damaged to be saved
cylinder walls scored, had to be over bored
pistons destroyed
valve peices went through the turbo- trash
cam shafts destroyed due to contact with broken valve stems

my new motor is just about finished being put back togther,, but a broken tb tensioner cost me alot of money

hope you find out it was something simple and you dont run into what i did.
good luck

lol I was hoping you'd be able to laugh at the situation

Hopefully you catch a break and everything is fine when you get it back together but if not, BR 2.0 + Stage 3 head ought to cure your blues

Sorry to hear that.

Were you able to pull the valve cover off yet? If there was any damage, it may show once you get a look at the cylinder head. That way you know what you are working with if you decide you have to replace some damaged parts or components.
