I have the same issue, i have to really cram it to get into 6th gear and i have to push it just as hard to get out, JUST happened tonight, dont know why, its like im locked out of 6th gear.

also when i went into 4th gear i got a bad grinding even though the clutch was completely in

What do you think my problem is? i hope my transmission is still good. i can shift into every other gear fine

oh no not another 6 spd, LOL yeah as long as 4th holds you should be ok. If it shifts fine into the other gears I wouldn't say the clutch is the problem, maybe a syncro?

If your 4th goes it's only a matter of time! I know of at leat 10 other people that had this issue. The 6 spd is a weak transmission due to the thinner gears. If your tranny is going please take my advice and others on the site regarding this issue, and slap in a 5 spd. By fixing the 6 it's only a matter of time until it goes again.

Fast-mover your tranny is just about done, the syncros, are going going gone! next it'll be the gear one day you'll be driving shift into 4th and it won't be there, you'll think you're in neutral, and shift into 4th again you may hear a few crunches, but it'll be like it's in neutral again. at that point it's a matter of time.

I drove 800 miles without 4th gear, then 5th went, and reverse, and I was down to 1,2,3,6, until it finally locked up. It took about a month or two. I now have a Shep 5 spd and never looked back the 5 is butter! Keep your shift knob, and shifter trim so it looks like it still has the 6 spd. lol

Can the 6 speeder shifter trim still be used without any modification with the 5 speed conversion?

I am unaware of anyone who rebuilds the 6 spd I looked into that aswell. you may be able to find the parts good luck, and then you have to find someone to rebuild it. The stock 6 spd is $3000-$6000 depending on where you find it, and if it's used or new. It's not worth the money, but the Shep is worth it...www.sheptrans.com

Get the 5 spd set the gearig the way you want it, so that 5 is much higher like an OD, remember you'll be shifting to 4th when you want to boost, around cars, and then back to 5th for cruising. Shepard Transmission can set you up with a 5th that is similar gearing to the 6th. I get good gas mileage from my shep 5, 70-80 mph 3200-3400 rpm, it's only when I drop her down to 4th 4300 rpm and boost that I get 8-10 mpg

Yep! you can keep the same trim but the shift cables, and shifter mount are different. ( Internals )

alright well me and a friend whos a long time old school mechanic tore my battery out to look at the shift cables and we noticed that the cable that controlls the lever that goes up and down isnt what looks to be pulling hard enough to lift up into the 6th gear, from under the hood we can easily get into 6th, by lifting the lever up and i think going with the other lever pulling it left for 6th, this tells me its not a schincro because when the cars off it should allow me to do this with ease? correct? so when lifting the rod and putting it into 6th my shifter goes into the 6th gearset... but when doing inside the car with the shifter it wont lift high enough givving me what appears to be a lock out.. has anyone expierienced this? and whats the cause / fix?

ok well if the car is off it will be easy, no need for syncro's. have him try to do it with the car on, E-brake on, and you in the seat with the clutch in. Be careful!

I have a Shep's built 5 speed swap in my MR and I can't tell the difference 1st to 3rd. 4th is a bit longer and 5th gear cruise on 60 was exactly the same on my 6 speed. I thought the cruise on the 5 speed was going to sit at high rpms but mine sits at 2600-2700 rpm, around there at a 60mph cruise just like my 6 speed before I swapped out the tranny.
