Help! (MR 6th gear wont engage)

Just did a little spirited run and noticed once i slowed down that i could not shift into 6th gear, i tried for the life of me and nothing.... finaly i pulled is really hard into 6th and it engaged the gear but i have to like really ram it. also i got a grind with the clutch completely down going into 4th gear. Anyone got any ideas whats up?

6th gear is preaty much not even there. but if i cram it hard enough it engages

do we know for sure that its the synchro, is there any possibility thats it something else. Also this thing is under the extended 100k warranty, is it worth just going back to stock to fix it

Welcome to the club buddy!!! I had that same issue a couple of years ago on my Evo 8 MR. The first time I had an issue it was my in-cabin Hallman MBC cable pushing down very hard on the transmission cable linkage. I managed to reroute the steel MBC cable and it worked fine. I recall having to do a trip from Phoenix to Tucson and the rpms were very very anoying until days later I figure out the issue.

My 6th gear went bad one night while drag racing the car (Do a search on my name and you will see a topic that I opened talking about it). Ironically I have never, ever ever used my 6th gear during my 180 plus passes on my MR but unfortunately in one of the passes the 6th gear stopped working and never worked again.

I strongly suspected that I bend the fork. I never repaired it so I never will know but I am a heavy car enthusiast with 12 plus years of drag racing and I can tell I swear up and down it was a bent fork. My 6th gear never grinded before either and I hardly used it unless I was on the hwy.

My 6th gear when it was faulty it wouldn't physically allow you to move the shifter into the 6th gear spot thus that is why I always thought it was the fork.

After Tshooting the issue I found with the help of friends and wife that I could indeed shift the car using my bare hands from the engine bay. I tried reseting the cables but it never worked. I did not felt like removing my transmission to get it repair specially after having puit a Exedy twin disc.

When I traded my Evo 8 MR I fooled the entire BMW staff, I removed the little carbon fiber sticker located on top of the oem aluminium shifter , this sticker reveals the 6th gear. The manager went for a test drive but ever aknowledged the issue. All the other gears worked fine but like I said, it was very ironic to have the 6th gear fail specially when the 1st through 5th gears are the ones that I beat the most.

Best of luck and by the way, a local friend and evom member is selling his 6 speed MR transmission. PM Warrtalon or ttp engineering, they have some good tales to tell.

Carlos

Ironic but true my 5 speed transmission is being repair as we speak on my 2G DSM at Shep racing. As per your car, I don't see why they wouldn't fix the fork.
If you really like the smoothness of the 6th speed(like I did) then you should repair it, I think the 6speed on the MR is a delight for driving in traffic, it has explosive response at any rpm, well scaled gears and very smooths shifts.

6 speed tranny is worthless. Go with a 5 speed

I had the same situation like user fromWRXtoEVO. One day after some drag racing my 6th gear didn't seem to want to engage smoothly. I also found out I could shift the transmission into 6th with my hands by moving the shifter cables in the engine bay. I never paid much attention until I replaced my stock clutch with an aftermarket unit. After everything was reinstalled, my 6th gear came back to life. Till this day I still have my 6th gear and it shifts smooth with no grinds. I would say it has something to do with the shift linkage connections in the engine bay. Good luck getting your issue fixed.

Its either the hub slider or as has been pointed out possibly the fork as well. For 1500 you can usually find most of the stuff for a 5 speed swap.

I did mine over a year and a half ago (I think I might have been second after WRX2Evo). Its annoying but it happens.
