Anyone ever blown a brand new turbo?

So I start my car up for the first time.....and see smoke coming from the exhaust.

The smoke refuses to stop....we cut off the car..and look in the exhaust..

It's wet with oil...lots of oil!

Decided to pull off the turbo and inspect it and discovered that it was the turbo.

really don't understand what happened here. Now I have to send it away to have it rebuilt

what sort of turbo was it? From one of FPs posts i believe if you have a faulty turbo you will know it between the first start up and first full spool. If it survives that it isn't a faulty turbo.

from start up when the car was just idling it was smoking badly....this was after about a minute..guess the oil needed to get hot enough to start burning (smoke)

I had a brand new Precision 50 trim fail on me, it was fully covered but still a hassle to pull it off and ship out for repair. They claimed the oil feed on the head could have caused insufficient flow, but still warrantied the turbo.

Before going through the trouble of sending it back, make sure your oil return line isn't plugged or kinked.

sorry to hear the problems. unfortunately part of a big build is usually working out the bugs.
Hope to see your car go soon, I want to see those rims I sold you on that beast!! {thumbup**

+1, if its the turbo, it should be covered under warranty. sucks you have to take it out and wait though...

+1, first thing I would do is check over the return line and make sure its flowing properly. if its not the oil pressure will go to high and blow through the turbo seals.

^return line was fine from the start...at the moment we saw smoke we cut off the motor and checked everything.
and for real!!...the rims will be on soon I hope.

Thanks for all the help though..Guess it is a realistic thing..I was just shocked cause this thing was brand new out of the ETS box.

nice, can't wait to see it.
Is there any shaft play in the turbo or anything out of the norm?

Was this at p&l for a dyno day like 2 years ago?

Like mentioned a few times... Check your oil feed, if its a BB chra from garrett, it should have an oil restrictor. Also make sure your oil return isnt clogged up too, like with packing peanuts from shipping or something... Been there...
