cold issue...

so as most of the north united states knows and for the most part
all of the it, its been really cold as of late (DUHH) im in the chicago land
area and its been extra cold yesterday with wind chill being below 0.
yesterday i didnt drive my car cause i didnt do much just sat around
the house. i went to start my car this morning and as usual it wont
crank over the first time no biggie. i try again, then again, then one
last time. each time the car sounding as if it wants to start but cant.
well the last time i tried i moved the shifter around a bit trying to
get the juices flowing sort of speak and whoom whooom THUD!
sounds pretty bad...go inside my mom heard it and said it just said
it sounded like back fire so i tried one last time and it makes the
same noise just not as loud. any ideas? have people broken stuff
just from trying to start there car in the cold? same thing happen?
anything? its AMS tuned and never had a problem when the car
was tuned by GRD during cold starts...im in no way blaming them
just stating the varibles (very happy with chris's work). anybody
have any ideas? or what to check for?

Probably just the engine trying to fire. Let it sit for a bit and try again (charge battery if needed).

make sure your coolant isnt frozen and a freeze plug didnt pop out maybe battery voltage is too low could try a charger.

Untuned with a mini battery, gsc s2, -3 this morning. After 5 times trying I finnaly gave up and floored it. First time ever had to floor it in 3 years. Finnally started. Tell you what I have had countless mornings in the cold, with 2 different evo's, heard many a odd noises, but never a loud bang.

Either you had a back fire, or snapped something in the tranny from lack of fluid. Although highly unlikely, its not impossible to snap a input shaft if you dont have the car in neutral, on a cold morning, and just let the clutch out fast. Usually this would only happen on a car that has a weaken shaft from repeated launches, or a factory defect.

Does the car still move.

still havent got the car started...
when i tried moving the shifter
i left it in first but never let the
clutch out im scared to try
to push the gas pedal down now
since the noise. it was weird
but ive tried it 3 times and still
the noise just not as loud so
i dont think its backfire.

Well, must have been quite a "thud" since you are that scared to start her. Any fluids leaking under the car, is your belt still in tact, etc. Did you rule out the obvious?

I have a mini battery kit, and today was the first time it wouldn't kick over, had to get a jump to leave work today. As nice as it is to open the hood and see that beautiful motor chillin, not so sweet to have to jump it. Think it's just because it was well below 0 windchill today?

dude your camed thats why. i to have 272's, i bought a new battery october of 07 and it still wouldnt start saturday mourning. i had to use a pretty powerful battery charger to get it to start. i suggest get a higher cold cranking amp battery and that should get rid of the problem. for the past to night ive had to share my one car garage with the front half of the evo in, with the door closed half way, and 3 blankets over the front of my car dont know what to say about the loud bang or whatever

i had no problem the other day when it was 0 degrees and wind chill -20. i meet a few friends over at hooters for a couple hours. when i came back out it started right up as usual. i have the mini battery and an aem. i did have another battery installed in the trunk, and that probably helps out a lot.
