Celica is right. You shouldnt run a VTA on stock ecu. Has it been done and is it being done YES but like mentioned will cause stalling issues is the main problem. There is a BOV that will recirculate 50 and VTA 50 so you kind of get a little of each if you want or i believe its adjustable in its range.

Now back to the OP he is going to need to do a compression test and see where he stands maybe a leak down test also. See what comes up and go from there. I dont think that running the BOV VTA caused his main problem. The bigger problem could have been him putting a filter instead of a plug on the intake. This could have caused most of his problems. Just my $0.02

um wow, this has me boggled. i'm really having a hard time understanding this. kid an open element and/or intake pipe would have yielded the same whoosh you wanted and actually helped you alittle. all i'm going to say is that if you unplugged your DV and ran low octane in your car and your wondering why your having problems. you seriously do not need this car.

 

You should pull your plugs and see what they look like actually now that i think about it. Post pictures of the plugs and we can go from there.
