Question WTF is this possible?

Yea so i was driving the other day and the evo just shut off. I was beating on it a little but not killing it. So i tried to restart it and it was crancking really weird. So we took it to the mechanic and he said it was the Camshaft sensor because it wasn't giving out a reading. We got a new one and installed it. but there was not difference and we still weren't getting a signal. we did a compression test and everything was perfect. so then finally we took off the valve cover and we discovered that the friggen exhaust camshaft cracked into two pieces!!!!! did this ever happen before and is this possible?

Definitely possible. Check the timing belt, it probably slipped, causing Mr. piston to get real familiar with Mr. valve, and then your camshaft went kablooey. Time for a new engine homes!

Obviously it's possible if it happened. I doubt someone took your engine apart while you slept and sabotaged your car. LOL That does suck though.

yea but if it did bend a valve woudn't show in the compression test? he said it was 180 across the board. And since it broke, the cam sensor would shut the engine off since it couldn't get a reading right?

It sounds like the cam gave and not the valve. I guess it's possible for the cam to shatter before the valve bends depending on the angle of attack. You could check the top of the pistons with a light to see if there are signs of contact.

You did a compression test before all this happened, and the compression was good. This means nothing. Your belt probably slipped, your pistons smacked the valves, and the valves cracked the camshaft. It is VERY unlikely the camshaft broke and caused the failure. Its more likely that the belt failed. Check the timing on the belt, if it is way off, or SNAPPED completely, you know what happened. If the timing belt is still OK, and is dead on with the timing, the camshaft probably did indeed fail as you assumed. Good luck!

timing is perfect and belt is tight and still in one piece. nd i did a compression test today after it happened and still shows perfect. I even pushed the springs down and the move, they're not stuck. I called HKS and they said it could be from bad casting. I tried to get them to give me free cams and they weren't falling for it haha

I about had my timing belt go out on me. Luckily my tuner told me about it before we finished the whole 35r build. Sorry to hear all that happened man. Let us know how it goes !!

In that case, this sounds like the camshaft did indeed fail! Consider yourself lucky no valve damage occurred. If its still getting 180 psi, you are good to go! Hopefully the cam bores and valvetrain didn't suffer too much damage...it is possible that the cams were incorrectly torqued down which caused the failure...I've seen this happen to many different cars unfortunately.

you might want to take off the timing belt and check it. ive worked on a car and the belt was in tack so im like its fine but then after removing it could see a few teeth missing. so check it out and see if there are any teeth that shaved off. and yeah if you have good compression then there are no bent valves.
