Just Opened My Engine . Need Some Input ( large Pics )
Hi. Long story short, one day I come back from a track day with very low oil level. During the first day of a track day, oil level was fine. Then ( did not check oil level
) between 2nd day, and the time I got back home, oil level was at the 2nd notch on the dip-stick . After taking out spark plugs, I noticed oil in the 3rd cylinder. Did a compression test on a warm engine with 194,194,194,194 .. Car has 10,000 miles on the clock. That was back in October 2008 ..
Because of my work, it takes me forever to do anything to the car, so for the past 4 months Ive been taking my car to pieces in order to look inside the cylinders and see whats causing the leak. I was hoping it was a faulty head gasket.
Before I post pics heres whats done to my car.
2005 Evo GSR
Full 3" Exhaust, with a test pipe
ETS intake, pipes and IC
255 Walbro fuel pump
Car was tuned on 93, put down 280hp/300tq at 21psi . At full throttle AFR was at 9. Not too happy about car being that rich .
Anyhows here are the pics of the 3rd cylinder that was leaking. Let me know what you guys think about it . I tried to wipe the cylinder wall so there are some streaks, but either way, everything feels to me smooth, but Im worrying about the up/down scratches on the walls.

If you can not "feel" any scratches on the cylinder wall im sure your fine. The up and down scuff marks you are talking about are from the pistion side skirt. Its normal to "see" these. but you can not feel them. Why was #3 leaking oil? to me sounds like you have a leaky head gasket. and the engine was burning the oil. no harm done, would prob show a rich condition on your wideband. if your going to track your car you need head studs are your puting alot of stress and heat on the motor, i would not be surprised if you didnt stretch some a head bolt. how was the coolent in the over flow??

Bores look normal to me. I rebuilt mine at about 46k miles and the looked similar with a lot more skirt wear on the bores. As stated above, as long as you cannot "catch" the scratches without your finger nail then you are fine.

Thx guys.
Yes Im actually installing ARP headstuds either today or tomorrow . And while racing at Watkins Glen , 2.2 mile road course, at full throttle I was running 9 AFR. On top of the #3 cylinder you can see oil stains close to the top of the cylinder, so Im assuming head gasket was at fault ...
I guess you live to learn, and you pay to play lol .. Back to the build ..
