i just changed my transmission fluid to GM syncromesh (pennzoil) - all I can say it did a world of a difference. Highly noticable change in shifting: much more smoother, less stuck feeling and from first gear I didnt have to rev it to get it in gear. the notchiness of the shifting has lessened considerably.

I just got HeavyshockProof Redline for my transfer case - is this the correct fluid to be using with my transfer case? and how many quarts do I use?

Regardless of which oil is better or not, I just looked at the polls and see that a lot of people are waiting to get the oil changed in the tranny.

EVO buddies, transmissions are built with the same machining and cleaning practises as the motors, but your motor gets its oil 1.) filtered and 2.) flushed a lot sooner than when I'm seeing here. With no filtering on the tranny, I'd say flush it at least before the 3k mile mark, and if you, drive it normally flush it 10k after that. All of those machining shavings, and cleaning oxides are going to be floating around and need to come out soon.

Good Thread here,

15000 and at 30000. No problems.

They recommend 30000 so I did it twice as often.

I did mine at around 18,000 (couldn't afford it during my 15,000 mile service so waited for next oil change). I had the dealership swap the fluid with OEM fluids. Once done you could immediately notice the difference. It is the same way with an oil change & filter swap, after every oil change the car runs smoother (and I swear is a little quicker!). As the fluid breaksdown you get the sluggish feeling again. I definitely noticed that the shifting was a bit easier/smoother and for that alone it is worth it.

If you could afford it (and if I could do things over again) I think changing fluids at 6000 miles (2nd oil change during tire rotation) and then at 15000 miles would be a good idea. Then I would do it every 10-15000 miles after that depending on driving habbits.

Me, I am going to stick with the 15000 mile rule since I can't afford to have this done twice a year (approx. 300 bucks a pop).

Make certain that if the dealership changes the transfer case oil that they only use Diaqueen LSD Gear Oil, part # 3775610.

Quite a number of dealerships have been using Diamond Gear Oil in the transfer case and this is not the correct oil for the EVO and it'll ruin the ring & pinion in no time at all.

I would visit the parts counter to make sure they have it in stock and make sure that the service tech knows to have them put the #3775610 oil in the T-case.

For my tranny, I did the 1st change at 8000 miles and noticed the fluid was dirty with a some tiny metal filings on the (magnetic) plug. I thought then that it should have been done sooner.

I did the second change at 16000 miles on the odometer. The fluid looked very clean with little or no metal. It could have easily went to 20000 miles or higher.

Based on this, I would say that the 1st tranny fluid change should be done at about 5-6000 miles. After that, it could be done at longer intervals.

I just got mine changed today. Mitusbishi Diaqueen in the rear diff and transfer case and Syncrofairy or whatever the OEM Mitsubishi GL4 transaxle fluid is. This is with 12,000 miles on the odometer.

That said, just new OEM fluid has helped shifting quite a bit, and is leading me to think that I'll change driveline fluids somewhere every 6K - 8K. What the hell, it's only money.
