warning signs

What are some warning signs that a transmission is going out or is beginning to need a rebuild? I'm replacing the slipping clutch and tob in hopes that it remedies the symptoms I'm experiencing. It's hard getting into 1st and reverse. I know, however, thoes symptoms don't nessesarily mean the transmissions going out. I just want know when I need to replace it.
I'm in Iraq right now and planning a build when I get back. BR build longblock and HTA86 (after I play arround with the stock IX turbo). Just to help justify the reason for my question.
Thanks.

Thats what it sounds like to me too.
I'm replacing the clutch soon anyways. I just wanted to see if if fixes the problems I've been experiencing. Along with the clutch, I'm replacing the fluids in the transmission, transfer case, and differentials.
But thats besides the point, what are some warning signs that a transmission is going out? Besides failing synchros.

I had an issue where my clutch would make it hard to get into first from a dead stop and would have to turn off the car at lights and put it in gear and start the car in gear. Changed my master cylinder, slave cylinder, bled numerous times. Finally decided to change the clutch...tada ..night and day difference.

IF you feel you've abused your tranny then that could be it. I do believe it's your clutch. Typical symptoms. Synchro's would grind more when trying to engage.

There were times where after failed attempts to put my car in reverse I had to turn off the car then put it in reverse.

The answeres I get here will help me decide if I go with a built transmission or build bottom end.

Bump for a revised question.

When planning build that includes a built longblock with HTA86 or even a Red (can't decide if I want max power or max spool, but thats neither hear nor there), should I be more focused about building the transmission and transfer case or the block? I understand that power to the wheels is only as much as the transmission (and transfer case) can hold, but how much power are we talking about here?
Thanks again.
