overheating...

so i just got my evo but im having a problem with the temp sensor. after i drive it for a while at random times it starts overheating ( it goes above the middle) but it goes back down . and its not only doing that when i push it either and also when i turn on the heater it cools down really fast. so my theory is that the thermostat is messed up. because the radiator and coolent is fine and the engine doesnt seem like its overheating. what do u guys think?

Every person who owns an Evo or any car with a cast iron block/aluminum head combination should have a spare thermostat sitting on the shelf in the garage. All you have to do is overheat once and the head warps. So, anytime the heat gauge is reading anything but normal swap out the thermostat. If it is not the thermostat you have wasted the price of a thermostat. If it is you've just saved yourself pulling the head.
