EVO is hard to drive or is just AWD different?

Does anyone else have a problem driving the EVO easily say like in stop and go traffic or stuff like that, that uses first gear and take off's?? I have a problem bogging mine when I take off, it seems that no matter how much gas I give when taking off, that the car wants to bog down to idle before picking up and going, when I let off of the clutch pedal. It seems to do this no matter how much gas I seem to give it, I do pretty decent if I do some hardcore slippage on the clutch. My question is, does everyone think the EVO is hard to drive as I do? Is the bogging on normal driving take off common on these cars? If so is there anything I can do to maybe make the throttle more responsive, or anything so it doesnt bog on normal take off or just taking off in general. HELP!!!

u gotta have 5000+ rpms and u gotta dump the clutch..

this is mainly due to awd and the clutch we have..

also, the lightened flywheel that comes in our cars make it a little harder to drive in stop and go, since it lets the rpms go up and down much faster than a heavy flywheel...

ya I feel your pain bro I find my self bogging alot at stop lights etc kinda ****'s me off but I guess it due to the AWD and the damn cluth restrictor. Im used to my HONDA where u give it a bit of gas let pedale go early and boom off and away it seams like u have to give the AWD more gas and let clutch out slower adn then it seems to be ok but I have to admit it takes some getting used to and I hate it sometimes I wish the clutch would engage supper fast but oh well **** happens and life goes on I will adapt sooner or later. I just need to drive it more the weekend only thing is prob most of my prob. That and my FORD probe Daily beater's clutch is totaly different

I think he's talking about regular daily driving.

And how light is the stock flywheel? It seems maddeningly heavy to me, just watch how long it takes to drop free-fall from about 4k.

I actually think the EVO is an easy car to drive and I drive in DC traffic all the time.

There have been some threads about idle drop and bogging at throttle tip-in on some cars with the A/C on (so it may not be just you). Seems like not all cars experience this strange behavior though. Some say a grounding kit helps.

If it happens all the time it may just be a glitch in your driving style. If its your first AWD car you may just need to get used to it. The technique is a bit different than a RWD or FWD car.

its definitely lighter than most stock cars.. most stock cars flywheels (like vw's for example) are about 22lbs!! ours are about 12-14lbs im guessing.. i think i read that in the evo8 specs that used to be here on evom.net (wish that section were still up!)...

It's no wonder we hear of all these clutch complaints after reading a few of these posts. The Evo is simple to drive and take off slowly with. Nothing special needs done...

you gotta be kidding me... dump the evo clutch? i don't know what you mean by dumping the clutch, but when i dump my clutch at any high RPM, there's a loud popping sound, a bog down to idle, then a slow and gradual pick up from low RPMs...

unless this is a fault in my evo, i wanna see how other owner's trannies, and the JDM trannies, runs... if the JDM is like the sti's transmission, i don't care how much it costs, there's gona be 6 gears in my car!

To simplify, the reason is that this car is made to go fast. It is fully race ready. It just takes a little getting used to. I went from a front wheel drive turbo Eclipse, to a V8 Mustang. The clutch just needs some getting used to in both cars. Now, I have this awsome piece of machinery the Evo VIII. You might have to give it a little more gas before you let off the clutch. Or you can ride the clutch (never reccommended!)

Rolling off the line used to feel very bogged with the rpms dropping down but throttle response seems instant now. After having installed my HKS downpipe I noticed power comes on much smoother and faster. I even notice that shifting into second under load is much smoother now. IMO the 2" downpipe provides a little too much backpressure.

I don't see how the clutch restrictor or AWD come into play when starting out "normally". I think the engine is just kind of boggy at really low RPM's, and the clutch doesn't really have a very good feel to it. Mine seems to catch lower than usual sometimes.

I think it's just the clutch. I never had an issue with my AWD S4. I've removed the restrictor and added the steel braided hose, but it still doesn't feel right.

I'm so afraid of frying the clutch, that I leave stoplights like an old lady. Minivans are pulling 3 car lengths on me from a stop.

its real simple... just give it gas the same exact time u release the clutch.... i mean keep it even and constant... it wont take long when you are able to do it fast enough when the times needs be

Same here. I'm so paranoid about the clutch it affects my enjoyment of the car. I notice the orignator of the thread traded in an SRT4. Definitely a MT. I think the EVO has a slightly tall first gear for daily driving. A 6 speed could have made all the difference.
