We sell NX nitrous stuff, and for a long time people have been asking me, "How much power did you see with the N-Tercooler?" (The N-Tercooler is a thing that hoses down your intercooler with sub-freezing liquid gas.)

I got the kit on the car a while back, and had seen some others claim good power gains, but because I'm a natural skeptic and I don't like taking the word of others, I wanted to see for myself.

Today I finally got around to rolling the car onto the dyno (thanks to the guys at Altered Atmosphere in Gaithersburg, MD) for a before-and-after pass. I did a baseline test (277.3 hp, 257.8 at the wheels), and then after a cool-down period I did another run with the N-Tercooler activated by the full-throttle switch.

The results? 325.6 hp, 314.4 torque...I have to admit, I was pleasantly surprised. I got very similar results on another run just before, too, so this wasn't a fluke.

It is cool (no pun intended) but Al has said that after two or three runs it is out and then $40 or so to refill. To me that is a short burst. How many runs were you able to get out of it?

 

I did two, and haven't yet weighed the bottle to see how much is left. But yeah, it doesn't last long. CO2 is cheaper for refilling, and is just as cold...

This is awesome info. All this was done with no additional tuning? Besides this short burst approach, is there something to the sort of ac compressor to achieve somewhat similar results? But for long term.

Right. I actually richened it up a bit on the last pull, because the severe cold leaned it out a bit. But it didn't seem to make a difference in HP or torque.

It would have to be one heck of a powerful compressor. It seems unlikely to me.

Did you use nitrous or CO2 for the cooling? If nitrous, I wonder if any got into the air intake - it could explain running lean.

I think Ford has a system that connects the A/C and intercooler on their supercharged Cobra. It only works for about 30 seconds before the A/C is overwhelmed, but it too added 50 hp.

 

I know this has sort of been answered but how long does a full 10 lb bottle last? Like how many seconds worth of performance enhancing driving can you get out of it? And can you not use it to its full potential for longer periods of time?

I was wondering if the n-tercooler disabled the factory water sprayer?

 

It lasts maybe 60-90 seconds of continuous use, although I haven't just triggered it and then sat there with a stopwatch.

After there's no more liquid gas coming out of the tank, it will cease to cool the core.
