Too much knock!

hey guys,

built a new car for my friend with a buschur built 2.3,cams,hta35r 1000cc, twin pump. and the whole sink.
now my tuner...who is a vendor on this forum..is finding it hard to tune the car because it is pulling so much timing due to knocking..at very very low boost, and almost 0 timing..it is still doing the same...about 15 counts of knock no matter what we do...i dont know what is causing this knock..it could be phantom knock?!!

we are tuning using the stock ecu...any suggestions, questions or recommendation are welcome...

any tuner worth their salt should be able to fix that in about 5 minutes. who is your tuner?

probably bad knock sensor or something hitting the block check for loose wires and other loose stuff that could be vibrating and making false knock

could be it but doubt it.

throw in some high octane gas and see if the knock characteristics stay the same or go away. if they go away then you have real knock, if they are still there then it is most likely phantom knock and the knock sensor settings should be adjusted in the ecu

thank you for your input...but believe me..my tuner is IMHO very well worth his salt and has done and been doing great great services to my cars and to the community.
so i am sure it could be anything but the tuner

thanks anyways!!

Good advice - very wise answer

I would advise a stand alone ecu - Hydra - or Vi-pec are my favorites

I ran into this problem today on someones car.. We added some octane booster and fixed the uicp from hitting the frame.. It could also be anything metallic in you engine bay producing a certain frequency from being loose or not isolated from engine vibration.. Check downpipe for rubbing as well..

well 5 minutes is a bit of an exaggeration.

but the knock control for the stock ecu has been disassembled and is fully tunable. the trick is to make sure that you in fact have phantom knock and not real knock for obvious reasons

FYI i ran into this problem with my stroker. it would knock around 3500 rpms no matter the load or how easy or hard i was driving. i threw in some 100 oct and it was still the same, then just to be sure i put in some 116 oct and it was the same deal. I tuned the knock sensor and haven't looked back since.

here is all the info you need.

Check for any loose objects on the car, whether it be exhaust leaks or such. Also with the built engine you may be experiencing engine harmonics that may fool the knock sensor especially at spool up. Put some high octane gas and if it doesn't go away then you have an issue. If it does though your motor is on the fritz.
