Evo VII or VII Mods

HI,

I am new to this car. I have just down on the 2003 model and would like to know the different modifications out there for this car.

1) What modifications can I get without any engine changes? Modifications that I can take off in case the car has to be repair by the dealer. What is the max HP can I get with type of mod? How much would all of these mods cost for both parts and labor? Any ideas on 0-60 and 1/4 mile at this rate?

2) What are the optimum mods with some engine modifications? Cost? HP? 0-60 and 1/4 mile stats?

3) How does NOS work with this engine with no engine mods?

Thanks

1) Normal mod's are exhaust, intake, boost gauge and boost controller. None of these should hurt your warranty. Should see decent gains here. The OEM exhaust is restrictive, and thus a more free flowing, straighter, 3" exhaust should free up some hp. Normal expectation is 15-20 from exhaust and maybe 10-15 from intake. The boost controller should allow you to turn it up to 1.3-1.4 bars of boost before you see fuel cut. With this, you might be able to see an additional 20-40hp. You should see decent improvements in both 0-60 and 1/4 mile times.

2) Next modifications would possibly be reprogrammable ECU, fuel pump, fuel regulator. This will allow you to go a tad higher on boost, and avoid fuel cut. You should then possibly look at upgrading internals depending on how much power you want(this can get expensive). Your 0-60 times and 1/4 stats just depend on how much you put in! Prices vary, and you should really do some of your own research. My advice is to hook up with a good tuner in your area.

3) I have heard mixed reactions to NOS on an Evo. Some say it can be done safely, others disagree. I would say that a 60hp stage NOS should be OK on standard internals.

Thank you for all the good info. I am very excited about this car. Can't wait until I get my hand on it. My goal is about 350 HP if that is possible. Thanks all.

Mordeth,
I've got an Apex'i air filter, HKS Hiper Muffler exhaust and a Blitz boost controller and I can't run more than 1 bar boost without getting fuel cuts therefore I think the 1.3-1.4 bar may be a bit optimistic

Andy,

It was my understanding that the 7 would normally not fuel cut until around 1.4 bars of boost. I do not know this from experience, but rather, from what I have been able to ascertain by reading testimonials and reports by others. As such, I would certainly yield to your information, as you come to this conclusion from direct experience.

I suppose each car is different, and because fuel cut is really determined by the amount of air going into the engine rather than actual boost level, I would guess that you could get fuel cut at lower boost levels if you have increased air flow(intake/exhaust).

Assuming that your car is measuring everything correctly(ie. boost gauge is correct, and airflow meter is accurate) and there are no other problems that are causin this fuel cut, I would say a new programmable ECU is in your future! You should be seeing better than 1 bar of boost my friend!

Mordeth,
You are correct, I completely forgot that this guy was talking about an Evo 7..... Whoops

I was talking about my Evo 6 which does have a nice big exhaust, decat and induction kit with cold air feed pipe.

It will fuel cut at 1 bar at 6,500 rpm in 4th gear so I usually just short shift 4th to avoid it.

I know of a few Evos that will fuel cut with the standard ECU after just doing exhaust and induction mods but at least I have the option of turning the boost down with my controller to avoid the cuts which is better than suffering with them

You are correct in assuming that next on the list is a.n other ECU to remove fuel cuts and allow me to run at 1.3-1.4 bar boost.

Claudius,
One of the guys from the MLR says that his Evo 7 doesn't fuel cut until he reaches 1.55 bar.

Question Boost Gauge necessary?

Does the Evo 7 still need another boost gauge when, for example, you got intake, exhaust, and boost controller? Doesn't the Evo 7 already come with a boost gauge? or is that inaccurate after mods have been made, hence the need for another boost controller?

Andy: you have almost the exact mods I have on my car. But mine is all HKS goodies. But I do run a Blitz DSBC bundled to a HKS FConV. Here in Osaka the weather is quite good, I've managed to hold a good 1.3bars safely...probably won't hold 1.4 bar all day but it can be acheived. Do the upgrade ECU, more accurate fuel management and also removes the speed limiter.

Cheers

HKS (down pipe, exhaust, intake,) intercooler piping from ralliart, blow off valve. these bolt ons i've seen installed on my friends evo7, and it flys. I am thinking of doing the same to my car but i am waiting for the american market so i can chose from a bigger variety.
