do you put your car in a forward gear like second before going into reverse? if not, try that and see what happens. no need to let the clutch out, just shift to second when the car is still and then try reverse.

Alby, in case you didn't know the above method stops the input shaft from spinning due to the inertia in the shaft/clutch even after you pull it out of gear. Think of it as trying to put it in gear with the clutch disengaged.

The reason it grinds is as someone posted above, we don't have synchros on our reverse gear. So either take your time going into reverse after you disengage the clutch or pop it in a forward gear so that the synchro can stop the shaft's inertia for you.

ORR.....your clutch is dragging and it's just ever so slightly. SO every synchro'd gear it's non apparent but you overwork the synchro's this way. It's only apparent in reverse because hence no synchro.

huh?? pretty sure there is a synchro in reverse! I build transmissions for a living, and have done tons of evo trannys, and YES there is a synchro for reverse, I've replaced them

I've got to be lettting out the clutch a little to get into reverse. The car has been this way since new. My DSM was the same way. My WRX is the same. It seems the makers aren't interested in producing a transmission that shifts cleanly into reverse.

I did not think there was a synchro in reverse. Its not a fast enough gear to need a synchro

i'll post up a picture of the gear set to show all of you that there is a synchro for reverse. There's a synchro for every gear in this transmission
