Buschur Catch Can Condenstation in Oil..Anyone Else have this?

Buschur Catch Can Condenstation in Oil..Anyone Else have this?

Ok, the title may not be the best title in the world but i'm at work and trying to figure this one out. Really this is for ANY Catch Can that drains back, not just Bushurs but i've only seen Buschurs Drain back. I basically know what is going on (at least I think) but i'm curious to see if anyone else has this problem. For some background, I'm familiiar to the scene even though i'm new to evo's (cough, from Honda Community, Cough) , the theory is basically the same.

I have an 05 MR at a little over 400whp currently (21psi). It has been a nice solid car (and still is). It hasn’t had any problems. Ever since I got the car last june, I had been waiting for a nice catch can setup to vent any crankcase pressure. If I didn’t see one come out by this summer, I was going to have a custom setup built. Fortunately, Buschur came out with one that was exactly that I was looking for and I had my first EVO Xmas present picked out. Nice size, drain back to the pan, open vent and best of all a complete kit. I installed this about 2-3 weeks ago (Thanks Jarod!)

Now, ever since I installed it, I have had water in the oil. I have confirmed that isn’t not an actual engine problem. I’m 100% sure of that. There is no coolant loss nor is oil in the coolant as well. The water in the oil happened almost immediately after installing this can and the oil is getting milky. Obviously the water is condensation but I never thought it would be this much. The car run awesome when you get on it and even daily driving. I’m just worried about the oil getting so contaminated so quickly.

I have read through this and I understand why I’m getting it (no vacuum pulling) but I never thought it would be this much. Easiest test would be to hook up the stock way again but I was hoping to avoid this as my time is limited like everyone else. I had to pull teeth just to put this thing on.

I just don’t want to change the oil every month…lol or worry about this. Did I get a defective can? Hell, I don’t know, doubtful but you never know. To me if the can is properly baffled the Condensation should be separated from the oil (At least this is what I gather). Thus maybe I have a problem with the can?? Again, not sure.

Lastly I’ll post some pics later tonight. Where the photos are is blocked here at work..lol

I had the same thing on mine. but i only ran it for 4 weeks before selling the car and pulling the can. I dont think is should be normal, but Buschur said it was fine. IF you were very concerned, I would run a water/vapor seperator inline with the catch can as well (dunno if it would help enough, but worth a shot)

The condensation/milky look on the underside of the oil cap is common. I see it all the time on EVO's/DSM's and such.

If your oil is turning milky colored then you have a problem and seeing as you would be the first I have heard of it on, I do not feel it is the catch can unless you somehow have water going into the can, such as hosing the engine off and water being pushed through the filter into the can.

How far do you normally drive? Would it be short trips where you don't get the engine hot?

combustion creates a little bit of water. so a little bit you see in the catch can is NORMAL. Now if you see lots of milky shake in the oil cap i would be worried of a blown HG.

I have nothing on the oil cap whatsoever. None. It's only in the dipstick. When I got home, there were water bubbles on the dipstick and a slighly milky content. THe milky content was on the breather of the catch can as well when I took it off to look.

Barneyb - I don't drive more than 5 miles each way to work then back (for the most part). Most other trips are less than 10 miles each way as well. So yes, that doesn't help much plus the weather here isn't very warm either....high of 45 today.

Lemmonhead - like I said, there isn't anything on the oil cap.

I think i'm going to put the car back to stock tomorrow and change the oil and see how it goes. I hate to do this as a pressure relief can only help but I don't want to deal with this all the time since I drive the car everyday

If anyone has any other suggestions on the can, let me know.

I find it extremely odd that the only place you are getting signs of water is in the actual pan, that simply is not normal.

How about changing the oil and then covering the filter, losely, with something to keep water out of it and drive it for awhile and see what happens. I have a feeling you somehow got water in the filter on top of the can.

Update

Last Saturday (4/11), I pulled the can can setup off the car and put it back to stock. I simply didn't want to deal with the oil/water combo. I had never had a problem until I put this can on. I drove this past week with more miles (great weather here finally) and have had no water in the oil.

Now, where the water is coming from i'm not 100% sure but I don't think it's coming directly in the can as the outside of the can was always dry but again, it's possible.

Catch Can Water when I pulled the can, I plugged the line with my finger. When i took my finger off the line, this is the water that came out.



Then at the bottom of the line, there was this milky stuff (which also existed where the filter goes on top of the can.



It's unfortunate this didn't work out but for a my daily driver, it didn't like this can at all. I guess i'll be searching for something else.

I'll be putting this catch can setup for sale soon.

Isn't moisture in the catch can usually just a function of how hot the oil gets.? In my mind if the oil doesn't get hot very often, then there will be a bunch of moisture/milky stuff in it .. Just some thoughts ....
