Just Got 272 hks cams, my thoughts!

I just Had AMS put 272 HKS cams in my evo. Before the cams i had SAFCII,Boost Controller,AMS FMIC,AMS Cat Back, K&N Filter, Exedy Hyper Single Clutch, and B&M short shift kit and a grounding kit. The car was very driveable with this set up. Then I put the cams in!!!
WOW THIS THING PULLS HARD. I get through gears so quick that I feel like I'm shifting more than my foot is on the gas. It gets to 80 so quick that I know im going to get in trouble with the law. The down side, the idle is chopy, it is not bad just driving around town and when it is at idle it sounds different but really don't feel very different. Then tonight I got stuck in stop and Go traffic, The car stalled like 3 times in an hour , I have never had it stall before. It fires right back up but it is kinda annoying to see that happen. It is almost like the engine only likes open roads and gets hot and *****y when it cant open up and play hard, does anyone else have this problem with the cams. I am rarly in traffic like that but when i am it would be nice not to stall. does the E manage have a stall feature on it to help this? ohh if you are considering the change. it is well worth it, the power is awesome!

I want to get these cams too but some people say that they have no idle issues on them and some people say they do. That is the only thing thats holding my decision

Why? I was thinking this setup is great for street, retain some idle and a bit more up top.

272s are for those that need some upgrade room. It allows you to take a once driveable car and turn it into a dragster only. For those not planning on trying to break the sound barrier yet want a good reliable car, go for the 264s. There is no difference at this stage. NONE! (except a gas guzzling/non idling 30k car)

Congr..... I readed somewheres about the E manage having a stall feature.

I ordered the HKS 264/264 and gears.
I just have to sit and wait now as they are backed order.
How much did u pay to get them installed?

Also, did you replace the headbolts ?

To the guys that are getting these cams.... Are you having them just srop them in or are you changing out the retainers, springs and valve guides?

Just wondering....

What about upgrading your valves at the same time and getting them cut?

From what I heard, you need some timing advance to make 272s idle like stock (almost). You have cam gears? I will be getting the 264/272 set-up and cam gears. Ill let you know if I get them soon and fiddizle with them...

If you want your car to idle properly, you need to do the following:

Cam Gears: Intake 1 degree advanced
Exhaust 2 degrees retarded

This was adviced to me by Simon Norris and the car idles good and pulls like hell.

Man, I don't know how many times I need to say this - YOU DO NOT NEED CAM GEARS TO MAKE 272's IDLE. So many people on this board preach that (usually vendors trying to make a sale). Yes, you can tune out the idle (and lose power) with cam gears, but it's not necessary.

I wasted my money on cam gears, they are set to stock settings - no advance or retard. E-manage = anti-engine stall. In fact, I was running around for a month w/o using the anti-engine stall feature and it never died, and always had awesome vacume at idle. Only when I added the air-intake did it get a little rougher and stalled a couple times on me. Now, with anti-engine stall setting it idles so smooth I can't hear the lopiness anymore.

oh well, the cam gears look cool anyways

Aftermarket cams are ground off index from the factory cams. That is why you need cam gears with some cams. The hks grids are closet to factory cams' index so you don't need them to run properly. You MAY pick up a little more power, but nothing mind blowing. Doesn't justfy the cost of the gears and, more importantly, the dyno time necessary to get the results. My .02

You dont need cam gears. i have them on my evo, with a set 264s the cam gears did nothing but waste a day of tuning on the dyno. i think that the 272 give the best power, but if you drive it everyday and in stop and go travel, the extra 12 hp its not for me IMO

Guys who ran dyno's and changed cam timing with 0 HP gains please supply the adjustments you tried with your cam gears both exhaust and intake.
