Generous present.....or bad luck??
so as a graduation present my folks basically got me a generous gift of a new top end..... forced performance fp5rs and supertech dual valve springs. now for my question... i know these are very aggressive cams and i have read lots on their site as well as searched here.... but i keep seeing posts going back and forth. i have a stock bottom end and turbo i plan on upgrading but probably not till the end of the year or early next year.... am i able to use these cams? is there really anything bad about running aggressive cams on stock turbo and bottom end besides not getting "all out of the cams"?? i have full adjustable cam gears if that will help with the timing and such...... thanks for the help guys
bump.... anyone know about clearance issues??? i keep reading that if i have OEM that i wont run into problems but at the same time it states not to run with OEM....?? so im confused
Instead of asking here call FP---sure they can help. You need to be greatfull someone was thinking about something you might want... Not a real good idea to even suggest bad luck. Have some respect for those who gave you the gift.
i would keep em man... i had my cams + a bunch of headwork waiting in my closet cuz i got such a good deal on them, then when i finished alll my supporting mods a YEAR later, i threw them in.....

no i am sooo grateful for the gift..... it really is too much i just wanted to be a little selfish and jump into installing them haha but im leaning towards just hanging onto them and building it up later this year
The 5Rs are great cams but work best with a well done set of supporting mods. As with any high lift high duration camshafts, the clearances between the pistons and the open valves are much closer when the engine is rotating, which puts a premium on making sure your valve train is very carefully set up. That's what FP makes sure people pay attention to. They recommend the 4Rs for the "average" modded Evo...
i completely understand that the 5r's are for more higher performance but will they work for the time being? i just dont fell like having the installed timed and everything then turn the car over and hear valves banging around..... that could be a biggg bummer
Somewhere around 12+mm of lift will HIT the stock pistons unless they have been fly cut. installing those cams would move the power band out of the efficiency range of the stock turbo. 4Rs would have been a better choice even with a stock appearing turbo but to each there own.
so i think im just going to hold onto them till i do my build later this year....... does anyone run these 5r's or anything comprable to them? what bottom end are you running? thanks
