2006 MR Cold Air Intake (CAI)

Who has what for intakes? Likes, dislikes, brand, cost? Injen only offers a short ram (SR) and other options seem to be mostly SR as well, or do not come with all the intercooler piping that the SP1898P comes with. Looking for some input from people who have put new intakes on their Evo IX MRs.

Aem , I love it. It had the weaponR on it when I bought the car but it was only on for a day. I didn't like the way it looked or felt. It also looked cheap in the engine bay.

I have the Apex'i and I like it alot. I don't think anyone really runs CAI... most are more the short ram style. The Apex'i doesn't really bolt up perfectly which is the only downside. I believe the Apex'i affects idle on the stock tune the least. Also the Apex'i isn't oiled which I like.

I have the HKS turbo inlet pipe and filter (came with the car when I got it). Air inlet temps logged at the MAF were around 126F. I fabbed up a cardboard heat shield for it similar to the Apexi one to see what the difference would be, and it dropped temps to 74F. This also got rid of my knock which allowed me to raise the boost a couple psi. Now that I've got the shape in cardboard i'm going to transfer it to a piece of 1/8" aluminum, cut it out, bend it, and make some brackets for it.

Cold air intakes are well worth it, especially on a turbo car. A 1 degree drop going into the turbo equates to greater than 1 degree drop coming out of the turbo, which means less work for your IC and higher knock threshold. Here's a calculator you can use to see what the difference is. In my above example, my 52F drop going into the turbo should translate to a 76F drop out of the turbo.

Bottom line, everyone on this forum should be aiming for turbo inlet temps as close to ambient as possible.

interesting results. i didnt know the apexi shield did so much. i personally wouldnt run a cai because i drive my car year round in new england and im too afraid to suck up water. some people actually mod the stock airbox to house an aftermarket intake - which ive thought about doing. i dont think you have to worry too much about sucking up water with a short ram sytle intake though.
