im learning more and more about cars. can someone give me the rundown about compression please

For example, if your car has a 9:1 compression ratio that means there is 9 times more room in the cylinder when the piston is down than when the piston is up. Engines with higher compression ratios (10:1 is higher than 9:1) make more power but suffer from knock. Higher octane gasoline is used to avoid knock.

Adding a turbocharger is just like increasing the compression ratio. That is why many of the modifications done to our higher output engines are in an effort to avoid knock.
