I recently pulled my engine and had been debating going to speed density. I was wanting to make a 4in intake and was wondering exactly what size my current filter was. Upon taking the filter off the maf caught my eye. Here is a pic, its almost funny.

Replace that one or go speed density. That one looks like it's going to fail soon. Probably caught it just in time.

Its there to smooth out the airflow for the maf readings. People have successfully taken the screen out without any ills affects to my knowledge. If I were you id get rid of that before your turbo does it for you.

Without the honeycomb the airflow appears to read higher than actual as confirmed by a richening effect in forced open loop cruise. I'm sure there is also a real improvement in airflow at WOT too (despite the false increase) by slight improvement in acceleration in logs, not much though. One problem is precieved load won't be as smooth so timing and afrmap will be less consistant.

If you have something bigger than stock turbo, the honeycomb is a definate restriction
