Angry Weid Shifting Problem... very stiff in neutral but shifts fine

Hi all,

Got an issue that is (well I think it is) pretty strange.

05 VIII MR
Everything drivetrain is stock as far as I know.

Start the car the other day and drive it, and noticed that the shifter didnt have the same action in neutral as it had before. Going from second to third, i had to help it get back to center.

Today I started it, and the shifter is VERY stiff. It takes a lot of effort to move the shifter along in neutral, only from side to side, not a problem getting it in and out of gear.

The car shifts fine. Goes in and out of gear without problem. Its just the movement in neutral. I drove it a short distance and then decided that I would try to figure it out before driving it too much more.

Any ideas?

Mine started like that and then it started getting sloppy going into gear soon after. When it started popping out of gear a week or so later, I started getting nervous.
I figured I might as well start with the easiest thing and changed my shifter bushings to solid ones.
That's all it took! I was so surprised at how much of a difference it made. It shifts better than it did when it was brand new!
I would try that first if I was you. For $30, it's the best bang for buck mod I ever did!
1 bushing is for side to side movement and the other is up and down. Sounds like you have just one that is worn (or frozen). The one for side to side action was frozen on my car and I had a B1TCH of a time removing it! The other one on my car was just worn and slid right off.
If you get new ones, make sure you sand down the rods so they are nice and smooth and apply some grease before you reinstall.
