E85 is not 105. It is NO LESS than 105 MON (not R+M/2 as advertised at the pump), I will provide the link where I did the math to show this. E100 is research Octane (RON) of 125-129 (depending on who you believe), it is then mixed down with 87 in a 15% concentration, but since the 87 is an R+M/2 number we need to find the MON of 87. It has been approximated that it is 85 MON so the government in their infinite wisdom added the 2 and divided = 105. The problem is that would only be the case if it were E50 not E85.

...and Q16 is the ish, I have seen cars lose power going from that to E85. For the money though I will gladly take the 1-3% power loss and run fuel thats 20% the price.

Just for giggles-

116 MON + 85 MON (in 15%) = 111.35 MON

http://www.ranney.com/mjr/fuel_blend.html

Enter both values, some fake prices and a 10 gallon tank. Then scroll down until you see 8.49999 and there it is.

They're saying it's 111.35 MOTOR OCTANE.

What you see advertised at the pump when you looking at 93, 91, 89, 87 is an average of MOTOR OCTANE and RESEARCH OCTANE.

Correct. I am saying the 105 you see at the pump is impossible and and a mistake and then I offered the proof to show why its a mistake.

Basically in a long round about way I am saying that E85 is the shiz and even to C16 but still not as cool as Q16 other than the price. I am trying to educate everyone who keeps thinking that E85 is 105 octane in any form.

John Bradley do you find that you can run higher timing levels on E85 Vs C16 from your experience?

I find that I can run similar timing yes. I wont say higher because I tune for MBT so I am not looking to just crank it up. 18-19* out the top (19* is MBT) and somewhere between 0-4* down low depending on the level of torque, turbocharger, etc.

It takes a lot of room in the trunk to lug around C16 in 5 gallon cans, and a 55 gallon drum won't fit

E85 comes right from the pump out here in Colorado.

What about people like myself that arent close to E85. The closest station to me is an 45 min drive away. Is there a way to store e85 without getting any moisture in it?

Store it in a Metal container if possible.... Try to buy a lined drum.. Thats the safest and least prone to absorbing moisture...

The 105 octane is the minimum that you will get from an e85 pump and since e70 is marketed as "e85" in the winter e70 has 105 octane but true e85 is about 112 and e100 is approx 125 octane. That is why it is 105octane minimum on the pumps.
