Does a short shifter really wear synchros faster?
Does a short shifter really wear synchros faster? I have read many posts on here as well as doing extensive research on google and have gotten mixed answers. It seems like a short shifter is moving the same amount as a regular shifter and the only difference the the movement on top which is changed by the pivot point. It also seems that synchro wear has more to do with not rev matching and crunching gears by shifting too fast. The synchros themselves work so fast that if you don't crunch gears on a regular shifter you shouldn't crunch gears on a short shifter. Anyone with extensive knowledge on the subject care to give a concrete explanation?
If you shift as fast as possible all the time, sure, they'll wear out your synchros faster, but so will a regular shifter since you're requiring the synchro to work so quickly. Unless I'm racing and want the fastest shift possible I take it easy and feel the transmission and let it decide when to engage the next gear. I have a short shifter and love it. Just drive your car with care and respect and it'll return the favor for many years
I agree with S2kracka. I have a ebay authority ss and love it. But normally driving I just let the car shift its self. At the track I just use NLTS and it feels better that normal shifting.
But Im a lil over 50k now and some hard driving. Im starting to get a 4th gear grind on down shifts. Ive only missed a shift once so I think its just that time. I thought Id get a little longer its always been strong for me.
