Does anyone else here wish they had a gear between 4th and 5th?

Is it just me or do you guys have a problem with the big gap between 4th and 5th, gearing wise? Has anyone researched possibly importing a 6 speed or having someone stateside modify the 5 speed into accomodating a ratio between 4th and 5th?

I've had the car a week and this is my only gripe...the car NEEDS another, shorter gear between 4th and 5th...anyone been down this road yet or am I going it alone?

personally, I don't have a problem with it. When I'm cruising above 50 I put it into 5th and the gap doesn't seem that bad to me. I'd actually rather have a 6th gear for cruising over 70-80 to keep the rpms down

Hey, if you wanna cruise, get a Lexus. =-P
I mean, the first 4 gears are so tight together, it makes the 5th feel like crap when you upshift at 4k and acceleration takes a hike.

I'll let you guys know how/if I manage to get a 6 speed in this thing.

Well the fifth gear is in a way an overdrive gear, plus you'd probably never use it when racing at the track. I don't think it's that bad, it got me 164mph on I94. About the six speed, I guess it would be possible to get a JDM six-speed trans

Man, I agree 100%! I actually think 4th is a bit too short and 5th too tall, because the gap sucks. I can be blowing someone's doors off, and when I upshift to fifth, my onslaught of power is CRUSHED. This is particularly annoying when racing modded WRXes that pull until 135mph in fourth. You can hold a lead, but when you have to upshift, you're DEAD. Needless to say, I've held 4th past indicated redline.

Look at the gaps in speed from a 7000rpm upshift:
1st: 40mph
2nd: 60mph (20mph jump)
3rd: 83mph (23mph jump)
4th: 113mph (30mph jump) <-too short
5th: 162mph potential (49mph jump) <- translated: "the speed killer"

Noize 4th is a 33 mph jump I like these ratios so much better than the wrx. The 4th in the WRX is the speed killer and is too long

Sorry bout that MP5, I miskeyed that typing in all those numbers.

I realize that the WRX 3-4 spacing really sucks, but its not as far spaced as our 4-5.

Believe me, I'd WAY rather take this gearing, especially for the 1/4 mile.

Point was, when I race a modified WRX, you can see me pull where he upshifts to fourth for a little bit. But when I go to 5th, I'm DEAD-SMOKED-ROCKED-WASTED. That's the only place the WRX's crappy gearing shines, and of course its completely unusable for anything on a track.

But the fact remains, given equal WHP outputs, a modded WRX will blow an Evo's doors off from 115-135 if the Evo upshifts at redline.

agree with Noize ! Same thing happen to me when I race a E46 M3 on the freeway ! when I have intake and exhaust and EVC. my 4th gear still hang with the M3, but once I up shift to 5th, the M3 just catch up fast and pass me !! I wish we have the 6 speed tranny like JDM EVO8 !!

I think the gearing is fine the way it is. But I don't race on highways. I like to thrash my car on twisty back roads, and 3rd & 4th gear are perfect for that. 5th is really only for highway droning or when I get stuck behind someone. If the car had 6 gears I think I would have to shift too much.

I used to drive a JDM Evo 7 GSR.... and you guys are right, once you hit 120 mph (top of 4th), 5th is too tall and the car slows noticeably. On the JDM 8 GSR though, 4th and 5th are pretty close. On quick upshifts you can even forget about 5th and just go into 6th.

No... actually there is not need for a gear between 4th and 5th. Longer gears mean less time shifting... You need more power not more gears. check my post out trust me this will fix your problem.
