Did you replace the clutch when the tranny was out? Your issue sounds like clutch rattle to me.

No. It had been recently replaced when i decided to do the 2.3. There's not much on a single disk to rattle unless something is broken.

After thinking about it more it's the transmission for sure. If it was anything else it wouldn't "spin down" when the clutch is pressed. If it was the clutch or TO bearing it would stop as soon as the clutch was all the way in. This takes about a second or two after the clutsh is in... you can hear it spin down.

Ya my bottles looked just like the translucent ones above.

When the trans is fully warmed up on a hot day its easy to hear if you know what your listening for. Also, it could be louder depending on what kind of clutch and flywheel you are using.

I don't mind the extra little bit of noise, mostly because I had an M coupe that I took the duel mass flywheel out of and installed a very light weight clutch/flywheel setup. Sounded like a school bus at idle when in neutral with the clutch out.

Heavy/thicker gear oil does help with this "backlash" noise, and the amsoil stuff seems to be a bit on the thiner side.
cool... i may leave it in for a while longer then. It gets really hot down south here. Every day for the past couple weeks has been right at 100.

I use SVG in my trans and it shifts crappy when cold and kinda notchy when warm but it wont break and thats what I care about. If you want shift quality use some synchrmesh and pull teeth off the gears.

I was told NOT to use the SVG in the trans.

Someone please chime in and verify this.

+1 sounds like it to me as well. Depress the clutch and the noise goes away.... is the perfect pointer. Could be coincidence that you are hearing it now. Trannys dont rattle..

The only advice I could give would be to switch back to stock fluid and see if the rattle disappears. If it does, it's the fluid. If it doesn't, it's something else.

SVG is not to be used in the tranny in no case, MTG GL4 is for the tranny.

I used to have tranny noise, figured it was normal cause I had yet to launch the car when i first heard it. I did the diaqueen thing for the first 51k.

When I had my front LSD and new clutch installed I switched to REDLINE 75W90 GEAR OIL.

Wow, is all I can say. No more double clutching, and now it shifts like butter.

sounds suspiciously like your TOB. pressing the clutch in disengages the engine from the drivetrain

x2, I used to run OEM, which sucked, then started using AMSoil, not bad, but very noisy, then Redline gear oils. Night and day difference for me, noise and shift quality way way better. Im not trying to knock AMSoil, i LOVE their products in subarus, but my evo only gets Redline now.
