Starter go bad?

I'm posting this for my cousin; but a couple of days ago his 06 Evo IX MR just stopped running while he was out of the car to get something out of the trunk. The car would not crank back up and seemed like the battery was dead. Jumping didn't work. We figure it may have been the alternator as it was acting up earlier and a fully charged battery would be able to start it and get it home.

We got the battery charged the next day and I inspected the starter; in which the power wire was loose(which is most likely my fault since I was the one that did the clutch install), though did not have any issues prior. I tightened it up and it does the same thing, does not turn at all but sounds like it's trying and then just cuts(you hear it engage, try to turn, then stop). We even tried to do a rolling start but I guess couldn't get it rolling fast enoughl; car is on flat ground and we can't find anyone to help push the car until the weekend. Plus, I was wearing flipflops.

Just wondering if anyone had similar issues as the car is not that old and only has about ~50,000mi? Also, any chains sell the starter or do I have to go to the dealership or are there any starters that'll interchange?

Thanks, Kevin
