People upgrade all the time.. And often the buyer won't know the seller. If it's a name brand cam.. It would have to take years of abuse before the lobes wear down. It's generally safe.. I would say it's best to ask for a picture and judge for yourself. You can usually tell when the lobe has worn out enough that it's not usable. Feel free to ask for a measurement to satisfy any fears.
You have an Evo 8 .. so NON Mivec.. The only time I have heard of cams breaking were on the Mivec INTAKE cam on the evo IX (9).. It is fine to buy them used as long as the lobes aren't terribly worn out. so like every one else said, just simply ask for upclose pictures to verify the condition.. Most people, like myself, usually sell cams because they want to try something different or upgrade to something more aggressive for more power.. but keep in mind.. when you get something more aggressive, you tend to lose spool of the turbo.. From my experience, Kelford 272s, GSC S2's, Cosworth M2's, FP 4R's, etc are all good well rounded cams .. Try to find a set of one of those.. Good luck!

It amazes me how skeptical people are to buy to a set of used cams for an avergae cost of 350, but we spend thousand of dollars for a used Evo with everthing used....majority of what is not visible to the eyes, like the cams!!!
opinions are gonna come out of the woodworks on this one. It's all about personal preference. I don't believe any answer given will have concrete evidence one way or the other. You are gonna take a bigger chance of faulty parts when buying used, that's bottom line up front. I personally don't like the idea of saving money on parts that have moving metal to metal characteristics. Next question would be, can you purchase used pistons, rods and crank. Can you save money, yes... but why. Good luck with your purchase.
