Put a long breaker bar into the crank pulley. Make sure it is secure and this should stop it from moving. Also putting the car into gear will help this too as the motor will have to contend with moving the trans and clutch to spin. This should do it for you.

Also if you have not seen in it, this tool works great!

Honestly I would just pull the stuff on the side and redo the timing belt. This will give you the best truth in knowing that your not a tooth off. I have done the zip tie method a few times but it really only adds about an hour to the job and gives you a chance to know it is 100%. This would also be a great time to check your balance belt deflection if your still run those.

Since your not pulling the head then what is a little extra time spent to do things exacting. Best of luck.

Is there a sure fire way to use the air compressor method without the the piaton(s) slipping timing?

I'm getting ready to do this with a Kelford cam install and would sure like to know.

Not interested in theories, just experience & proven results. Thanks!

I bought one of those tools for my 2G. It works like a charm, it only took 35 minutes to do all the springs and retainers with the head off the engine. If your going to do springs and retainers, I suggest getting one. I agree with MitsuJoe about just taking the head off. I would rather be safe than sorry, plus you can just throw on a new Head gasket and timing belt while your in there.

Just a question about the Kelford 272's, Can you use stock springs/retainers as long as the RPM's are not kept high??(Under 6,000 RPM)

Getting these cams, but didn't know if I really needed to change other stuff.
