Anyone else drooling over the AEM EMS?
Yea..It would be similar to you putting down 400whp in an evo without opening the engine. Considering it came with 160hp to the crank stock. 300 to the wheels is pretty impressive; although the powerband was pretty unfriendly.
And most of this was thanks to the AEM. The vortech fuel management system is kind of limited.

The EMS certainly looks very promising - can;t wait to get my fat hands on one. IF I can actually get good at tuning it we may offer EMS tuning as part of our services - BUT that is a LONG way off
In the meantime - I wondered how many of you all drooling over the EMS have considered this bad
puppy :

They just released the EVO 8 Board
I believe XX tuning has a few in stock
Looking forward to hearing reports on that bad *** ecu as well as the EMS - there are a lot of nice PNP stand alone options for the over 400 whp evos
Remember - under 400 whp IMHO a reflash is the easiest and best way to go !

Actually...heres a good thread on Engine Management Systems...
Many submissions from 8-9 second Supra's.
In the end they come out with that Motec and AEM are both equal in capabilities; some slight pluses and minuses with either unit.
They pretty much leave out the inferior units

And considering Buschur went 11.6 on the stock turbo with the AEM; I think that says enough.

"Raretoy, besides our 1040 rwhp auto car, we have done 4 other cars all dynoing over 900 with the AEM.
Im sure the Motec is the top of the line when it comes to a standalone, but the AEM does everything and much more than any supra owner will ever need at a great price, with great tech support and that is the bottom line."

"14,000 RPM, the AEM can do 25,000RPM. 40+psi of boost, the AEM is unlimited in this area, run what ever pressure sensor you want, we have 3000psi sensors in stock, imagine that!" "I know MoTec, and have tuned dozens of them. Do you think we would build this unit without doing our homework? Do you think we would then build something that doesn't come close? " "If you haven't seen anything that compares to MoTec as of yet, you HONESTLY have not used the AEM system, Seriously!
BTW: SAAD has already made over 1000RWHP with the AEM, he has one on all 3 of his Supra now. Ryan Woon, Mark Tozer, Stephen Schuster, have all made over 900RWHP. Ask anyone of them if they would trade their system. All of their factory equipment still works, and they haven't had to rip up their $50,000+ cars to re-wire in something."

the AEM is exteremely complicated though. I have it on my Prelude and it was a PITA to tune. I also have heard from a few of the designers of the system, that it still has alot of bugs that need to be worked out...
I have an EMS on my personal 8 with 3037S and a slew of other items (more going in in the next week to equal Al) and I must say that the AEM is a bit rough to get some of the drivability stuff down perfect compared to some other standalones but it is constantly being improved and updated.
I will also reiterate that unless you can tune, don't buy it. Go with a reflash. Al is right; for 350 whp or less, a reflash or piggyback is plenty. While it's impressive to show four digit whp Supras running around on EMS's (and nothing to take from that), Supras can belt out over 800 at the wheels with piggybacks. And more basic/less customized piggybacks than some of the things we already have. I have also seen (in person) Supras that drive like sh*t (excuse my french) because the tune shop couldn't get it nailed down. While I'd love to get my hands on those supras and see if I can't fix it, be aware that you need to either be very well versed in tuning a standalone or have a tune house that is versed in the EMS. It is different in some areas from a lot of other standalones. At least wait until more maps are floating around for the EMS to start with.

I agree with Quantum 100%. Do not go to a standalone unless its an absolute must, and even then driveability will not be half as good as with the stock ECU. My Prelude runs hardly like stock when off throttle, but WOT and she screams...
That's another thing. Thanks, Mark. You just reminded me...like piggybacks, EMS settings are NOT going to work the same on one car as another (I'm sure most interested parties know this already, but it should be made absolutely clear). Even running on two stock cars you will have variances that may cause running instabilities and issues. Also keep in mind you're given a base map, NOT A RUNNING MAP. Anyway, other people's maps are good for reference and good for stealing some settings and tweaking them, but they will not just be upload and drive for the most part.
I'm still on the fence about the standalone vs piggyback vs flash.. I'm probably going to wait it out a bit, but I've been watching the Autronic site for a while I can't figure out how I missed the USDM 8 Board..
I was under the impression that the AEM EMS was a derivative version of the Motek?? Am I way off?
Anyway, I need to get my hardware in line first (Buschur stage 4) and then ponder my ECU options.. I still am leaning towards the Utec, but there's so much "Good SH*T" out there that I've decided to go the patient route and give it some time to work itself out. Unless someone wants to send me some free stuff.. I'm definitely impressed with what can be done with a reflash, but I'm definitely one who can't leave stuff alone and would hate to have to reflash every time I changed or optimized something.

I would indeed hold off. You will know you are ready when you aren't trying to choose between a reflash, a piggyback and a complete standalone.
To make one correction, you CAN get drivability down. My own EVO runs completely open loop on the street every day. The only closed loop thing is timing and IAC solenoid for idle. Fueling is completely open loop and it runs pretty well.
If you put my map on another EVO with the same mods, it would definitely require tweaking.
The AEM "base" map is a joke. It has the proper definitions for the sensors and whatnot but otherwise it will only foul plugs and wash cylinder walls. It is just values filled in to get going.
