Transmisison whine 3k-5k rpms and little throttle

I know its hard to diagnose a car from the internet. i was just wondering if someone had this problem and managed to find what it was.

My car developed what sounds like a trans. whine that starts with very light throttle from about 3000 rpms to 5000 rpms and then stops completely. it does it in all gears but i think it is more persistent in 5th maybe because i cruise more with that gear. I can hear it with the windows down but the noise stops with neutral or the clutch in. sometimes i can only hear it with windows down.
i recently hit a big pothole so i am not sure if i damaged a hub or wheel bearing. i never launch my car so i cant imagine a tcase problem. i also replace gear oils quite often and put the right spec. oil.

i replaced all gear oils and the oil and magnets were both clean visually.

More likely for it to be a t-case problem. I know you said you don't launch it or anything, but that doesn't mean it's not the problem. Especially since the signature whine is usually how you identify a t-case issue.

it drives the same. it is a faint high pitched whine mostly heard out of the car with the windows down. not the usual death whine or smth like that. it goes away after 5k rpms even with high gears and 100+mph the car is very quiet there.

i cant figure out what damaged the tcase thats why i am looking at other things.

TC would make the noise full time, clutch in or out. Did you check you axles?

Possible Tcase for you as well. Sounds like the exact symtoms. If you can post a clip we can tell you with better certainty.

thx for the replies. ok smth really weird is going on. i drove the car today. this time i could only hear it with the windows down only so it cant be the tcase and it is not speed related. the only thing left to do is the check the gearbox oil and replace it with new oil and thats it. if it goes worse it will break eventually.

Mine does something kinda similar...but only in 3rd and 5th gear.

I hear whining in 3rd from about 2K-3.5K rpms no matter how much/ how little load on the driveline.
In 5th gear I can sometimes hear it..but not always (very faint).

It's been like this ever since I installed an Exedy Twin clutch (1.5 years), so I attribute the noise to that (nothing else changed with my car). I still AutoX and drag race it (launches and hard shifts) with no failures or changes in noise. I change the fluids about every 7.5K-10K miles (GL-4).

I doubt it's the T-case or you would be hearing it all of time...not just under 5K rpms.
