I have been having grinding issues in 5th gear for 2 weeks now. I havent had any issues before with it so i just assumed it was my synchros. That is fine with me since i can get it fixed, but my question is if it goes bad completely will it cause it not to go into 5th gear at all. I cant shift into to 5th with the car running and cant shift into it with the car off. Usually it should go into all gears with the car off, but it wont. So i just wanted some advise to see if it is indeed the synchro from other evo owners since i'm still fairly new to my evo. Any help would be appreciated.

 

Usually the grinding can be attributed to a synchro but the fact that you can't shift into a gear with the car not running might be a sign of a bigger problem. (Even with a bad synchro you should be able to force it into a gear ... grind if the engine is running but it will engage)

I would recommend having it checked out when you have some time.

 

Thanks, i guess i will have it checked out. I was thinking the only other thing is the shifter cables, but for it not to go into 5th only doesnt make sense.

 

check the cable clips.. they are loose or the rubber dampers in the u-bracket are worn it will cause problems like not going into certain gears......
