You should see a bigger power gain going from an Evo VIII turbo to an FP Red than if you were to switch from the Evo IX turbo to the FP Red. Generally, cam upgrades seem to produce more generous gains on Evo VIII's than they do on Evo IX's.

larger duration camshafts will shift your powerband to the right. (more lag)

Show me your stock 9 turbo powerband with your cams and I'll overlay my FP Red with stock cams... mine will **** all over your setup.

Ernie: I have been wanting to do a swap from my Green turbo to a Red. But have been scared off by the significantly slower spool-up of the Red. Can the Red's spoolup be improved by sticking with stock cams or a milder cam grind such as the GSC S!? My Evo is an VIII and not a IX.

Lag is obviously more than an Evo 9 turbo. But you need to think in terms of usable power band. Before your stock 9 turbo was out of breath just after 6k. The red has enough airflow to support power past 8k. You picked up 2k rpms of rev range out the top end that you didn't have with your stock 9 turbo.... you may have lost 700RPMs of spool down low, but you still have a net gain of 1300 more RPMs of powerband. Not to mention that it's making MORE power everywhere.

I'm going to "tune" the car next week and I'll be working on spool up and MIVEC for a few hours.

I'll be sure to share my .hex files when I'm done tuning.

will the addition of a set of M2 cams offset the lag of a RED (compared to the lag of a stock cammed, and stock turbo'd evo )?

I would also recommend getting the FP Red before the cams for a IX. The stock cams are capable of a lot of power as R/TErnie and some others in the Dyno Tuning forum have posted. Plus, the Red will make a much bigger horsepower change than upgraded cams with the stock turbo.

Here is a boost-RPM graph for my car with the FP Red, stock cams, e-85, ~63 deg outside temps. This is a 3rd gear pull on my 6-speed. Peak boost of 29psi hits at ~4,300rpm.

I just installed FP4R cams over the weekend, so I will need to tune accordingly and see what kind of changes that makes.

Out of curiousity, did you turn up the boost and have it retuned after installing the Red? Or did you just have it retuned after installing the cams?

I got my cams first but i messed up and got Crower cams. Get some S2s and the RED at the same time then tune for E85. You will see some good numbers if u tune it right. You can have a 100psi turbo but if u dont have a good tune it goes no where.....

There's really nothing to disagree with... you did something wrong with your setup, most likely the tune if you're only making 370. On pump I gained 70 whp... and on race I gained 130+ I made 420 on pump... I'm sure I'll make even more when I go back and spend more time on the setup.

There is NO WAY ANY set of camshafts are going to net you 70whp on pump. Period.

Bigger camshafts increase lag.
Bigger turbo's increase lag.

Bigger cams make 30whp.
Bigger turbo's (FP red) make 70whp.

Cams + install = $1300
FP Red + install = $1400

Literally the same amount of money to do either... but you get more than twice the power potential with the Red. What is there to think about?

Is am curious as to whether anyone ot there is running the Red with GSC S1 cams on a stock engine? I would guess that most people running the Red in conjunction with GSC cams might tend to opt for the more radical S2 camshafts. But, is anyone out there doing Red and the milder GSC S1 cams?
