Tranny Swap
Tranny Swap
Does anybody know if the Evo VIII transmission will work in the Evo IX??
I know that there are tranny rebuilds where the Evo VIII 3rd and 4th gearset can be swapped into a IX tranny, just wondering if you can just swap tranny for tranny.

Yes. I've been talking to Shep Trans and they are building an Evo 8 transmission with street strip upgrade and evo 9 1st gear for my car. The LSD is in the transfer case so nothing to worry about with that.
Difference with evo IX and 8 transmission gearing is as follows.
1st gear 9 is longer
2nd gear same
3rd gear 8 longer
4th gear 8 longer
5th gear 8 longer

I just got my tranny from shep last week. I'm thinking twice about doing the swap without a lift. I think I could get the six speed out. But putting the 5 in is gonna be a *****. Anybody do a tranny swap in a "driveway" setup? Just want to know if it can be done and what it takes.

Yes it can be done in a normal setting. I just did it this weekend. Put the car way up on jackstands, and go at it. Youll need to lower the subframe a few inches to get room. There is a how to on a few forums, just follow that.
ok for those of you who have not down this litterally 5 times in your garage on jack stands.
remove three of the 4 subframe bolts, leaving the one closest to the steering wheel in but loosened up as much as possible. Then remove the rad ( if you have a stock turbo you can skip this step). Then I use a ratchet strap from the turbo to the lower rad support. Using this strap you can pull the engine forward making it much easier to get the tranny on without knocking the retaining clip into the bell housing.
I spent 60 bux at harbor freight and bought an engine support bar. You could make on yourself but it is super usefull. It has rubber pads and sits on the inside edge of the fender and has hooks and chains that come down. This supports the engine while you have most of the motor mounts out. The nice part is you can adjust it and use it to lower the flywheel side of the engine, with the side of the engine a lil lower and forward lifting the tranny on is almost trivial.
