How to identify a TRUE IX turbo
Hey guys,
I tried a quick search and couldn't find anything too useful.
Ive got a stock IX turbo being shipped to me on Monday. When it gets hear I would like to verify that it is in fact a IX turbo and that it is in fine condition.
What markings or serial number could I look for? What should i check besides if the shaft has any play on it and grinding etc?
Any suggestions would help!
Thanks

google search evo 8 turbo and evo 9 turbo. The differences are obvious in its size. Also on the 8 turbo it will say TD05HR-16G6C-9.8 and the 9 turbo will say TD05HR-16G6C-10.5
Pretty much the main differences is the compressor housing and turbine housing on the 9 turbo is bigger. Also 8 turbo's have 2 wastegate flaps whereas the 9 turbo only has 1.

What about making sure the turbo is in fine condition? I'm assuming it may be obvious. Looking for shaft play cracks bent compressor fins etc?

Yeah, it's the same as any turbo. Check for shaft play, damaged fins, spin freely, etc.. But, if you are buying it and it's being shipped to you, it sounds like it will be too late at the time of getting it to do anything about it if it is damaged :P
Yeah, shaft play and of course obvious damage to the compressor/turbine wheel is what you are looking for. The IX turbo has a bigger compressor housing. Also, some VIII turbos have a 10.5 hotside.
