Exclamation The reason for my EVAP code - Check this out!

So after driving around for a few months with some EVAP trouble codes in my 03' EVO and my emissions due date closely approaching, I finally found the cause of all my problems. The code started off as a P0456 (Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (very small leak), and turned into a P0455 (Evaporative Emission Control System Leak Detected (gross leak). What I found was a bit surprising. I started off looking around for leaky or dried out vacuum lines and replaced the gas cap as the easy place to start. Just by dumb luck, I took a flashlight and shined it down the filler tube for the gas tank. What I found was a bubbly rust spot that had rusted through the filler neck and caused a hole. The plastic cover that "protects" the tube and hoses from dirt in the wheel well , ended up getting packed with winter sand, salt, and debris and over seven years ate away at the tube. I ended up replacing the whole filler tube assembly which was a pain in the a** and took 5 hours to complete, but cleared my codes. So a word of advice if you live in an area that salts and sands the roads, take this cover off when you change your tires back over after winter and clean out the crap from behind it!

The old filler neck and the pile of dirt that was behind it!

The hole that caused the codes

The old and new comparison

The cover that should be removed and cleaned out where the dirt was trapped

Just one more reason I'm glad I don't live on the East coast or up North.

From what I can understand by reading the warranty manual, there is a full 3 year or 36,000 mile warranty on ALL emissions related parts. Then there is an 8 year or 80,000 mile warranty on the engine control module, transmission control module, catalytic converter, and onboard emission diagnostic device. I would have loved to have the dealer change this, but I wouldn't want to see the price to do it. If anyone needs parts like this, i suggest www.mitsubishionlineparts.com. They are a dealer in Rhode Island that has a great OEM parts catalog and UPS's them right to your door.
