valve spring install question (without pulling head)

So Im planning on installing some cams/valve springs on my IX, I dont want to pull the head so I was thinking of just pressurizing the cylinder and pulling the valve springs that way...

My question is, is there a way to lock the crank when doing this? Ill have the cams off and the belt ziptied to the cam gears, I dont want to pressurize the cylinder and push the piston down and rotate the crank. and throw my timing off

thanks

Get yoursef a piece of steel about 2 inches wide and not sure how long (cut to length needed). Pull the accessory belt, belt tensioner and damper. Drill holes in the steel for the holes in the crank sprocket and a hole where the large bolt is for the tensioner and bolt the two up. Done.

as long as the piston is all the way to the top you shouldn't have to lock the crank... I've done this many times and haven't had an issue

Do one cylinder at a time, put each cylinder at the top of the stroke so the valves cant fall in.

Just like stated above no need for to lock the crank.

Depending on the valve spring compression tool you use i like to do all the exh side first and then tackle the int side after

Be sure to have a good magnet handy for the keepers and i alsolike to stuff rags down in the oil passages just in case.

This is not possible if I have the belt tied up to the camshaft sprockets

Just did that because I had a warped head, it will take a good 8 hours if you haven't done it before, but it isn't that difficult. The hardest part is that damn intake manifold bracket, which I purposely didn't reinstall hah. Bad part is you will need to replace the head gasket, but that's like 60-70bucks online.

get the universal spring remover from snap-on.....was ~$80-

put the car in gear if your concerned about the crank turning....

i forget how much pressure i put into the cylinders, but i start low & creep up on the regulator to keep the valves from moving.

definately put paper towers into all the drain backs, as thats where 1 keeper will fly into if you dont!

Would if I didn't live in Idaho hah. I know how it is being in the military, so I feel your pain.

It really isn't that hard to get the head off as long as you have two days to spare. Of course doing it without removing the head would be preferable. I had my buddy uninstall/reinstall the springs/retainers so I didn't have to put up with that hassle. I took the head off and removed the cams.

I've done it with the head on the car. You need a spring compressor made for this application - not inexpensive.

The parts are tiny, it is not like working on a V8.
