yet another timing belt/tension problem, please help
yet another timing belt/tension problem, please help
Hi,
changed cams/valve springs this weekend.
broke the tensioner tool off.
taken off the upper plastic cover and removed the broken piece of tool.
BUT the Auto Tensioner is now at full extension (up) and we can't move it down. (tried prying the arm)
I'm thinking of removing it off the engine and pinning it, then reinstalling.
Is there any other options?
1 - Do i need to remove the lower cover to get the auto tensioner out?
2 - do i need to take the crank pulley off to get the lower cover off?
3 - whats the best way to take the crank pulley off (with engine/box still installed).
Kinda stuck at the mo, if i can't get any further, i'm going to have to drop the engine to fix this.
any help would be awesome.
Cheers, Mike

You need to compress the tensioner piston back in. Put the tensioner in a set of big channel-lock pliers and put the handle of the pliers in a vice and tighten like so stopping when the holes are aligned through the casing of the tensioner and the piston rod. After you've done that, put the grenade pin/drill bit/small screwdriver in. Something like this.

If you have access to a big Vise that is even better and easier. Just compress it slowly. A machine shop or mechanic should have one.
