I don't keep up with it
good info
Honestly it sounds like you guys are just plain being ripped off by Tilton. But it is kinds a buyer beware thing. They offered you a 300 rebuild or 2200 rebuild. Thats kinda says it all in my book. these clutches start slipping when .025 material has worn from the plates. This doesnt at all mean the clutch needs a rebuild. when .025 wears from plates the pressure plate looses mechanical advantage and cant apply the needed torque on the plates. At that point all you do is add the next thicker pressure plate spacer. Then the clutch will again hold massive torque. The clutch is good for another .025 of wear before it slips again. Then you add the third supplied thickest pressure plate spacer and you are good to go again. When it slips for the third time you have to send to tilton or you local clutch builder and they will shorten the pressure plate legs so you can use the original shim again and start all over with the reshim process.. according to tilton you can shave the legs twice for a total of 9 lives as I call it. at that point the plates will likely not be usable from being too thin. the shaving leg rebuild is the one that costs 300. or about 100 at local clutch re builder. As I stated my clutch is still on the first shimming. here is a picture of the two supplied thicker rings. and the tool to measure finger height which tells you when to install next thicker shim
I only remember there being 2 spacers in the box with mine. The smaller one I installed when I first put it in and then there is a thicker one. Ill have to look and see if there is another one, but I only remember there being 2 in the box. The one you use and then one extra.
The amount of money you guys are blowing on clutches kinda boggles the mind. I am having issues even putting up 1400 for the exedy not to mention the rebuilds after 10K? 20K? Plus cost of labor if you aren't doing it yourself. That's borderline a retarded amount of money on a car that is worth 25K.
There has got to be a better option that is cheaper and durable. I only plan on pushing 450whp on a mustang dyno, so I want something that's going to last a minimum of 20K miles without needing a rebuild.

Not to get off topic but how are the Carbonetic Triple Plate Carbon Clutches? I havent seen too many reviews on them for evos but in the 350z crowd they are quite popular even with the big hp guys.
I am a big advocate for Carbonetic/ATS stuff.. Their clutches, diffs are top of the line.. You don't see them because of the support, rebuild expense and overall supply.. I have had my twin for almost 20K miles.. never an issue. no slip, multiple races and daily driving..
If this is true, I hope this can be made a sticky.. Excellent info indeed..

I have atleast 40 passes at the track no lockouts (shifting at 8k)

if you're telling us about how well your other brand clutch holds it would be helpful to let us know how much torque you have...also how about the high rpm shifting? any lockouts?
absolutely Chris, you are right, should've given some more specs... I was at 300/300, never dragged.. I ran about 8 hard laps on Nurburgring, and about 10 or so TA runs on various tracks in Europe. That was the first 14K miles with the majority being daily driving with spirited runs in various mountain roads. The last 6-7K miles was with power outputs of 340/330, no track days and daily driving. I am having the car built now with new PT5857, and shooting for 550/500. I was considering rebuilding clutch, but we will see how it looks first. The rebuild was thought only for peace of mind, not necessity. Of course that will be better determined once its out and inspected. Which should be in the next two weeks. And not to jack the thread, but keep a look-out, complete build should be ready to post in next few weeks. I know there are a few people who are curious about the 5857 on a 2.0L build. compression will be stock as well.
I've had the ATS as well, I bought that clutch in 04 and had it for 1.5 years until Buschur fully built the car. It was a great street clutch and good for about 400 FTQ IMO. As soon as I started making big power is when I went to Tilton, which held...but not for very long.
