Yes my short block is blown.

Here is what was being talked about...either I go OEM and just drop in a new crate engine and return most of the car to stock for like 7k.

The other is to go with a 2.3 stroker and I would need to rebuild the top end and also upgrade my clutch, intake, fuel system, since I would be jumping to a FP red turbo from stock IX and then get re-tuned which will probably be like 10k.

Or you can buy a BR shortblock for 3k (you can find even cheaper from other builders) and swap that out. Of course inspect for bent valves and make sure the head is in good working order, and swap the shortblock in. Even with replacing the shortblock to a 2.0 and getting an entirely new ported and polished head with valves, you can keep the total under 7k, will gain some performance and it can take a beating.... why isn't that choice being considered...

$1,625.00 NEW stage 3 head
$3,050.00 NEW 2.0 L short block

$4,675.00

So with shipping it could be like 5, and you could even have someone install it all for you and keep it under 7. You could almost get the 2.1L racing shortblock from BR and keep it under 7. Would have to install that yourself though, labor would put you over.

I looked at the 2.1 and it doesnt fit what I want to do. So the only 2 options were OEM or 2.3 stroker. I wont have a core when I buy a block, so dont forget to add core costs. Mine has a hole in the side behind the turbo.

Yeah man, shop around, you can find great deals here on the forums. You can still keep it under 7 and pay the core charge in cash. Don't just throw a new OEM in there. It can't handle what the aftermarket can, and with a bigger one you can't rev as high. Take your time and shop around on here.

I am in Michigan, I have looked around for a wrecked evo to pull just the block, but no luck. Which is probably good that no one has been in an accident.

I am really thinking going with the 2.3 because of the other mods I already have and going to a FP Red. I plan on spreading the cost over the winter, so its not a big deal and the downtime doesnt matter much.

Parts for a buschur 2.0L will run you 5k alone and that does not include the head. Factor in all of your misc parts that should be replaced such as timin belt, accessory belt, tensioner, water pump, resurface your head, etc, and the price quicky grows. Labor will run you anywhere from $1200 to $4000 for so keep that in mind. I was quoted 40 hours for a complete engine swap with all of the misc parts listed above and some that aren't listed.

$3050 + tax + shipping ($200)
misc. parts as listed above (all Oem) $1000 +
comes out a little shy of $5k when you factor in shipping and tax

Yea, the cost of a built motor is probably going to be around 10k once everything is done. The cost for an OEM crate engine is around 8k with everything done.

But also think about your plans for the car down the line? are you going to want to drag or autocross it? What I said earlier was that the stock motor can only do so much before it gives up. Think about how pissed you'll be when you put another crate motor in and then it blows and were back having this discussion again...

Here are my thoughts: If this is just a weekend 'toy' car and occasional drag car, go stroker or 2.4l. You already said you did not really like the lag, and you can get a 2.4l cheap enough. If this will be a drag car, a de-stroked 2.1 would be the way to go due to being able to rev it much higher. A stroker or 2.4l is not a good idea for a drag car (imo) as you will be breaking drivetrain components left and right.

Based on what you have wrote, either stick with a stock 2.0 or get a 2.4l. Stroker would be nice, but expensive and doesn't seem to fit what your goals are for the car.

The goal is really just to build up a strong engine. This is not particularly going to be for drag. The cost for 2.3 is definately expensive, but over several months its not bad.

I considered going back to stock, but with further plans thats why I am really thinking stroker. I just need to figure total cost. Also need to figure what all I need, this is where I need the help in finding out what exactly needs to be done so the car will run nice and I wont have to worry about this problem again.
