Is this even possible?

OK, so I had this little small breather cone filter on my valve cover that I got at Advanced Auto. Made of plastic and steel mesh for the filter. Opened the hood yesterday to find it blown off! I thought the breather hole was just what it is, a breather hole. Not some kind of barrel to shoot a projectile... Told some of my mechanic friends and they even haven't heard of such a thing happen before but just said "possible". I personally don't know because this thing is supposed to be a filter so that air can get thru.

Maybe the filter wasn't that free flowing.. Never had a breather blown off in the past.

There can be a lot of air and gases going to the crankcase at full boost. That is how people blow out the dip stick.

Wow, I have never heard of that much pressure coming out of the breather line! Put an oil catch there and do your turbo a favor, and also prevent anything from blowing off ever again.

Did you see it blow off? It probably just fell off. The part if the breather that is left looks way too large for that port. My guess is you squeezed the base so much the filter element fell off.

i got mine from advanced and the rubber piece was jammed in the filter so theres no way it could of just fallen off, unless yours was defective. i guess AMS has a new part to start upgrading haha

Yes, that's possible. Under boost, the PCV valve is closed and the only vent that the crankcase has is the breather hose. As someone mentioned, that's exactly why some people blow out their oil dipsticks.

You have to keep that breather hose as breathable as possible. It's a two way system...a lot of people tend to forget about that. Also, having it hooked up to the turbo intake pipe helps pull that crankcase pressure as well. A lot of people run breather filters there since they don't want oil in their intake pipe/intercooler, but you can run a catch can or a similar setup, and very little oil should be comnig from there anyway. My recommendation is to hook it up the right way and use a catch can or some type of filter in between.
