Weird Turbo Noise

Hello I am a new Evo owner and was introduced to this sites by other friends. Just picked up a Red Evo yesterday and found out later there was some weird noise coming from the turbo.

When I spool the turbo i could here fluttering sound, i am pretty sure its the Turbo not the BOV. The car has a SSQV BOV originally, and the flutter of the turbo sounds like fa,fa,fa,fa,fa and sometimes the boost would cut. Turbo is still boosting 20.5 psi with Cobb stage 1 map. Haven't boost leak checked it yet, so don't know if its either boost leak or a compression surge.

If anyone could help that'll be great!

Correct me if I'm wrong but what your describing sounds just like the sound the ssqv makes.

I am 60% sure it sounds like the turbo because the fa,fa,fa,fa only happens when the turbo start spooling almost like something got it stuck. Its really hard to explain the sound. Also there is a high pitch sound when its spooling and it gets louder when i rev up.

if it sounds like a kazoo, you should check all around your LICP and possibly your turbo outlet pipe

Wastegate actuator may be loose or going out. The BOV may be bad too. It could be leaking at boost.

Second on the wastegate as mine does this too when it hits 25. I have a boost gauge and whenever it flutters, the gauge needle shakes between 23-25.

Do you have a boost gauge? I don’t know if you can adjust that Bov but my forge I have to adjust when the boost is turned up.( so the spring is tighter and holds the boost in) If this is to weak it will flutter. Also highly recommend a boost leak test

is this only happeneing while in part throttle acceleration? if so yes its your BOV. this happens to me with my GFB bov when the car is cold. best bet is to try and get a 9 DV or at the very least an aftermarket bov that can recirculate.

I would do a boost leak check. Its really easy to do yourself and really inexpensive to do yourself as well. This way you would cancel it out. I would be thinking BOV or Wastegate actuator. Its really hard to determine based off the description.

yep i do have a boost gauge and it shakes during max psi.... I'll get a boost leaked check right away and see if i can recirculate my hks bov.

Sounds to me like the vacuum line on your BOV may have come off. Definitely do a leak test.
